Not so fast. You talk as if it’s an absolute. There is such a thing as cause and effect.
Why does keeping the skip ahead selected grey out the ring choice that’s set to fast ring, whereas the non-skippy gives a choice of fast or slow? Is that not an “effect”?
Perhaps there may be no effect so far as not getting rs_5 of yet as you say, but along with what Marty commented about the Registry settings, I’m quite sure systems are still registered as such on a server in queue. I dare not change it for it may get deregistered and the registry hack might not work forever. Sooner or later they may grey that out as well. So, since this is all new, I’m staying put.
For clarity, in a real sense Skippy is still active.
About the difference between Fast Ring and Skip Ahead. There should also be other differences between them. In skippy all inbox apps should be reinstalled to the latest beta version, while on norml Fast Ring Windows should remember what inbox apps the user has removed.
I can't verify if this works right now, as I don't have any machine on Fast Ring (2 x physical PC are on Release Preview and 1 VM on Skip Ahead). If someone can test and verify my theory, it would be highly appreciated.
I have just started getting GSOD & BSOD same error after latest upgrade to Windows Insider 17017.rs prerelease weird I was on Slow Release!. It is the volsnap.sys error a lot of people are having.
I have a WIn 10 Pro 64bit USB Recovery but it is about 12 months old.
I also have access to a laptop same version of Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
I have 2 issues I do not have windows.old to get files from on the affected PC. I removed it as it was running fine and needed the space (i know stupid) but never had an issue with a slow release before.
I have seen a few reports on how to fix it by copying the volsnap.sys from the old windows directory but I do not have one
So I thought I would get a copy from my laptop but then see it comes from the driver folder in windows and my laptop drivers are different to my main desktop.
But I do not want to do a new install I want to keep all my apps folders and settings if possible any suggestions, please.

Seems that I can't rejoin Skippy since I did clean install of 16299.15 updated to .19. Option is there but doesn't stick, as soon I set it and leave page it gets turned off. I set it to fast and it started installation of 17017 but it never finishes. That kinda proves that Skippy and Fast are merged but I don't know for how long it will be like that. Other computer that also started from 16299.15 is staying on Skippy but updated without any problems to 17017. At least I have a vay to make ISO when next Skippy/Fast arrives. Both computers are under same account.
This is just supposition (i.e. your opinion) - we do not know if MS will resurrect skippy in future, or if they remove option time being in next upgrade, whether registry edit will work in future etc. Menus may change etc.
For time being, it is FACT that the rings have merged. So for time being there is no difference whatsoever, and settings in menus are irrelevant until MS decide to do something.
Try this perhaps assuming you have access to usb, dvd, and another Windows 10 install disc. Download from post 471 onto usb. Plug usb into your pc. Boot pc to load from dvd w10 other disc, choosing repair my pc and nav to command prompt to then use copy function. See post 444 2nd fix obviously changing the ? to point to your applicable locations and also change path as necessary.
