Hi there, PaulLemonidis and Chazzo125. Welcome to Windows TenForums.

Please read back and you’ll see the fix. The volsnap.sys file was either corrupt or badly reworked/rewritten. Simply disconnect any interior secondary drive(s), let it update, replace the file with an older one, reconnect the drive(s), and you'll be good to go.

Meanwhile, my inch worm Acer is puttin' along upgrading to 17017. It's taken every bit of 3-1/2 hours and now at 75% after restart. She's heading into the last corner.
I got tired of waiting for this desk top to update so I took my wife out to dinner and then shopping. When I got home my computer was at the login screen. I could be wrong but 2 out of 3 of my computers takes hours to download and install. 2 out of three of my computers are using Windows Defender. I'm thinking about trying a 3rd party security suite the next time I do a Insider build upgrade.

I got my volsnap.sys from the windows.old folder. That may make the difference. Not sure. Followed this guy's instructions to the tee. Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast+Skip Build 17017 for PC Insider - Page 37 - Windows 10 Forums

Hot lead = Power cable wasn't seated all the way.
Well, followed your suggestion re copying volsnap.sys from .old folder. Now won’t boot with usb drives unplugged or plugged. Think it’s time to give up on this totally. The other two drives continue to work with usb’s Plugged in so tired and ready for bed.

Remember geeks, clean install is unsupported

Does that mean that OOBE is also unsupported? ...or maybe 17017.1000 is unsupported altogether since it is not GA?

I mean, what's the difference in the end if I upgrade or clean install? As far as I am concerned, same binaries are applied anyway, and only difference is that there are extra steps to do during an upgrade.

Maybe Jason could elaborate on this?

Sir, please let me ask some clarifying questions, especially as you have earlier shown that you have certain rules to determine who is a real Insider and who not, and the above quoted post of yours being clear continuation to that supremacy.

Windows Insider Build 16296 ISO, the last available at the moment for download at Download Windows 10 Insider Preview Advanced.

Do you mean that you laughed to all those users that had made the ISO of 16296 before the official ISO was released and clean installed using the self made ISO, thinking they were crazy, not real Insiders?

The day, the very moment the official ISO was released, was it OK according to you to do a clean install using this official ISO and remain a real Insider?

If you answered yes to both above questions, could you please explain what is the difference? Not being a real Insider, breaking against "Insider Rules" when clean installing today with self made ISO, but remaining "a real Insider" following the rules clean installing the very next day using an official ISO? Both, self made and official being of course the same.

    Very sincere,

    Kari
Your above post smacks of hostility....you are entitled to your opinion, I to mine.
Your opinion is based on technical expertise, though I note Jason Howard disagrees....mine on common sense.
As for your Very sincere....Beware the wise man in his conceit.

No hostility intended. You openly told you laugh to issues your fellow members and Insiders are having. You have previously told us that real Insiders do not clean install.

I wanted to clarify this. An example: at the moment, according to you and I admit, Jason from Insider team, clean installing this 17017 is unsupported. But, one day in not too distant future Microsoft will release 17017 to Slow Ring and few days later ISO, at which point like magic clean installing 17017 becomes supported.

I cannot see the difference, how it suddenly changes from unsupported to supported without any whatsoever changes in build itself, no new code, no nothing.

And yes, I was very sincere in my previous post.

Just what the heck do they mean by "Not supporting clean install" ? For ages mainstay of repairs was "Clean install for troublesome updates !!!
Not supporting, does that mean Not condoning, not recommending or not offering help with it ? If it's last one, I haven't got any help from MS or their team but from other people on support forum and most of all from this forum.

I think they mean that because there's no ISO or MCT hasn't been updated yet, then clean install isn't supported.

That still doesn't explain by what definition is their "support" and sounds only as an excuse.
