New Photos.DLC.Main Add-on for Photos app in Windows 10

Microsoft's update servers began pushing out a mysterious new app recently, and the unexpected arrival is stirring up suspicion and anger among some Windows 10 users.

The new app is called Photos Add-on, and its entry in the Windows Store offers few clues about what it is or does...

...It is indeed an update for the built-in Photos app, included with every copy of Windows 10. Its official name is Photos.DLC.Main (DLC apparently stands for "downloadable content"), and it's listed in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features. Find the Photos app, click Advanced Options, and look under the App Add-ons & Downloadable Content heading:

The Photos add-on can be uninstalled, although there's no reason to do so.

As far as I can tell, this is the first public release of a feature that was announced 18 months ago, as part of a Windows 10 preview build delivered in April 2016:

You will also be able manage app add-ons and downloadable content [in Settings] if the app supports this capability as discussed at Build 2016. While there are currently no apps that support add-ons or downloadable content in the Store, please stay tuned for availability of apps that do once they are released.

The new Photo App for me has been a bit of a letdown, not only does it load up from Onedrive it installs in triplicate whether you like it or not...This of course is using up extra resources
Trying to delete the two extra duplicated unwanted pictures gives a message "this will delete all copies in One drive"
As I do not store photos in Pictures to save Hard Drive space....they being stored in Onedrive and backed up in a separate caddy.
Decided that as far as I was concerned this was both a waste of storage space and an unwanted app, so uninstalled.
Fortunately my Pictures in Onedrive remained intact.

Hmmm, I just checked my Photo app and I don't have this DLC. And Windows just did an update yesterday. Current Win version 1703, Build 15063.674 (non insider). Just checked my laptop and it doesn't have it either. Same Windows build.

This is confusing. Neither of my machines list/have this add in. Should it be automatically pushed? Or do we have to download it in store. I had a quick look earlier for the add in on the store but didn’t find it. Maybe I need do search a bit more thoroughly but it’s not obvious

    cheers

It seems the Add-on gives you access to pre-fab MS music, themes and 3D effects.

If you uninstall the add-on, the extras are no longer accessible,

however, the add-on will re-install itself moments later!!!
    (Okay MS!?!?!?, whats the point!?!?!?)

    Hi,

Did you have to find it in store to download the add in or did it just push automatically?

Hi Josey, I am running that version of windows. I guess we are just not on Microsoft’s VIP list! It’s a shame because it looks quite a useful add on which may breathe life into what I thought was a poor app
