This is a terrible "improvement" and there is no way to turn it off as far as I can see.

I'm not so against it for forced reboots (like during upgrades which it has done for a while) but for a normal reboot it is a dreadful idea. I get stuck sometimes when my only option is to reboot - I don't want the problem program launching itself.

Hopefully someone will figure out how to disable it.

Like I said before, I think it to be a great feature, especially in a business environment. Lots of nights when in business I'd put the thing to sleep instead of wasting time in the morning booting up to open up 6 or 7 programs that I used. Was able to start where I left off. Of course it was a much slower machine back the too.

One thing I've noticed about you IT pros. This isn't to put you guys down whatsoever and correct me if I'm wrong. Yooz didn't use a machine in the productive sense navigating through 6/7 programs pounding away at the keyboard completing business tasks, especially Office programs. You were navigating deep into the guts of the thing to keep them running. Much different scenario altogether I think.

Don't have time to try it at this minute, but I think I saw somewhere that the shutdown command with the right parameters (perhaps "shutdown /s /t 0" is an example) will stop it. And "shutdown /sg {etc}" will reopen apps.
But that was in the post I originally linked to as well which turned out to be something different - I *think* it's linked functionality but I'm not sure?

One thing I did notice when trying to clean install a new 16299.15 machine - I'd originally created a local account, then went into Users to add a MSA.

After a Restart (due to an updated driver or something) I went straight into the MSA, to let that set itself up, but when I tried to shutdown, it said that someone else was logged into the computer. I assume this is because it had automatically logged back into my original local account after the restart while I was manually logging into the MSA. Very confusing behaviour!

(I think I also came across it on one of the Microsoft folks' twitter feeds.)
Edit: I also use those shutdown commands a lot anyway before this latest change, so I was overriding the behaviour and hadn't noticed it before.

Yes, I also knew those commands, but I never thought that I would be "forced" to use them to solve the problem of applications that open on their own once I rebooted the PC, until J. Gentleman told me that I had to use them to avoid that "feature".

An option (to use old or new functionality) would have been good though as you can't easily type "shutdown -bla -bla -bla" after ctrl+alt+del and it is harder to remember than + X >U > R.

Presumably someone will tell me you can open task manager, open a command prompt and so on and so on but it really is mildly annoying (not a lot, just a little bit, but all these little bits add up for me).

Today I put my laptop to sleep by closing the lid. When my wife later opened it, at the logon screen the audio from my previous website restarted and was perfectly audible prior to any logon. Bit of luck it was BBC news that is all I can say - these restart automatically things have more chance of embarrassing than helping (IMO).
