I might do a backup this weekend and try it to see what happens. I could swap the SSD and use the SSD with the GA release. I haven't used it in so long I probably have list a mile long of updates to install. 🙂
As I posted go to the Windows Insider Advanced Download Page and you can get 16296 or go back further to 16278

the iso for the FCU installs over the creators update with no problems. did not experience long download install times, maybe about an hour or less. it was over and done with while i had some coffee and went out to play with the doggies, a common event that takes about an hour. IMO OS i.e. win 10 that have been on a machine for 2 or more years would probably have some errors that may be preventing the upgrade from successfully happening. i had to clean install to get the xxxx.632 version to post as successfully installed and then mounted the 1`6299.15 iso and installed. passed dism health and sfc /scannow with no faults detected.

I use the same drivers on the CU and AU and they both come out of slkeep without a restart. Ever RS3 build is like this and I have reported it to the Hub about 50 times. But since I am no longer in the program, it feels great not conerning myself with a possible 4 hour update..
Have you tested using different drivers? If not it may be worth trying.
