Cumulative Update KB4043961 Build 16299.19 for PC Insider

OK, so today's Update tio 16299.15 took a little over two hours -- download starting to desktop refresh -- and that is with Defender disabled and Firewall disabled. That's better than the 3 hours + it used to take, but I can't see the "general public" being happy with waiting HOURS for an Update -- and they don't know about disabling Defender and the Firewall to speed things up.

Explain the 3 hour difference - turning off defender makes no significant difference in my tests.

The installation phase is what slows my computers down. The actual download is fast. Last night even after I hit restart it still took hours. I gave up at midnight and when I checked in the morning my computer was at the login screen. I never had this problem with the ESD method.

I have various VMs and physical machines all downloading the updates and not one took over an hour. It's odd how it can take hours for some. My machines though are pretty clean and don't have a lot installed. Perhaps that is the difference?

The average person will not wait 2 to 6 hours for an upgrade with a DVD would take 20 minutes. But you can believe as you wish. The download the old way was faster as was the installation. My God someone on a dial up would be doing it for a week.

Back in my dial up days it would take me 3 days to download a new version of Linux Mandrake.

My laptop is new and I have very little installed.

This is my opinion about UUP. UUP at this time is a failure. MS needs to admit this and give the Insiders a choice of how we want to install new builds. For those who have no problems with UUP could still test the UUP upgrade process and the new builds and those of us who do have a problem with UUP could use the old reliable ESD process and continue to test new builds without taking hours and hours to install

They are unlikely to go back to old technology that consumes a lot more bandwidth, we can only hope they improve the process.

I can see a lot of computers getting bricked when the average user gets tired of waiting hours for their computers to update and hit the power button. On second thought that might be what MS wants. It could be a win win for MS and the OEMs. Sales of new Windows 10 computer will sky rocket when the average user replaces the computer they brick by not waiting hours for the computer to finish updating. Save bandwidth and increase profits from sales of new computers.

The other thing we can do at the moment is to use the tool that downloads the UUP files directly from the Microsoft servers and create the ISO with those files, that's what I do for some builds ago.
