Everything needed to create a Windows 10 Setup ISO is still downloaded in a build update, UUPtoISO is proof of this.
This is where you are wrong about the downloading part. UUPtoISO being able to create the ISO proves nothing else than that all needed files eventually exist on the system in the downloads folder under SoftwareDistributions folder.

Download size difference between ESD and UUP methods is gigantic. That is what UUP is all about...to conserve internet bandwidth.
Many people here will not notice it because they have super fast internet connections, but in the latest builds the download time is the same as before UUP was introduced, it is absurd because that was precisely one of the only advantages of the UUP system, the first time I noticed it, I searched in the "source" folder for the "install.esd" file because I thought that Microsoft had reintroduced the old method, it seemed to me the only explanation, but obviously it was not, I already talked about this in another comment:

I am confident that decompressing the esd file or any other compressed files is the least of our concern. Download size difference between ESD and UUP methods is gigantic. That is what UUP is all about...to conserve internet bandwidth.

I have a pretty good idea how the whole UUP process works, why having an SSD instead of HDD or turning off Defender speeds up the process significantly. I have talked about it before. Should I start repeating myself for a third time?

One thing we all can agree on though is that from a users perspective UUP sucks compared to ESD, especially when the files are now received as express packages.
I agree turning off defender saves a bit of time but the rest is much slower with uup than install.esd.

Also, the bandwidth saved is not that big really, and really only of interest to people on slow/limited plans. In fact, a lot of users consumed more bandwidth due to auto upgrading failed, as they repeated downloads. With uup,I bet that will happen even more.

For me, personally, I really do not care, as I usually use an iso to upgrade now if uup fails (creating one of course) which happens far too often.

I strongly believe the trade off of uup reliability versus download size is just not worth it.

I reckon this forum is going to get flooded with uup related issues. We should not forget we have all learnt from each other, and know the tricks but the mass population - no way.

I hope I am proven wrong, but .........

I'd like to see any evidence that anything in the \softwaredistribution\downloads\*.* folders come from anywhere other than newly downloaded material, or what processes are involved in synthesising and integrating data already present on the disk into the downloads\*.* folders.

    Do you have any?

Download part of the upgrade process takes me about 2 minutes out of 40, which of about 30 seconds is just negotiations about what to actually download.

Incidentally, I bet MS developers all have top of the line pcs and never actually think to test things on mid/low end devices - LOL
Not just MS - I've been trying the free Sophos Home anti-malware product.
It's utterly hopeless on my old spinning-disk machines, and even the small 32GB device with some sort of solid state disk but a low spec processor, because it just aggressively steals all the system resources for updating and scanning for several minutes as soon as I switch on (which is usually exactly the time I want to achieve something on the machine).

It is not the download phase that is the problem - it is the installation phase that is so much slower. My vms take five hours with uup to upgrade, and about 2 hours when I use install.esd. As I have fast internet, the download times are only 15 mins or so for me.

Explain the 3 hour difference - turning off defender makes no significant difference in my tests.

OK, give me about 6-12 months to reverse engineer the whole UUP process into source code and I tell you bit by bit what it really does.

...nope...I am not gonna waste my time on proving anything...we can all believe what we believe. I don't care.

All I can say is that what is downloaded and extracted is NOT consistent with what is actually in the SoftwareDistributions folder just when WU ask the user to restart the system.

And what about those who do not have a super fast internet connection? precisely that was one of the main reasons why Microsoft introduced the UUP system, by the constant complaints of many insiders in the Feedback hub about the download times, obviously this is not seen in the English version of the Feedback hub, but in other languages like Spanish, the number of complaints about this was overwhelming and the comments that had the most votes were those who spoke about this, and worked because the download times were halved, but in the latest builds already it is not like this, and without this the UUP system doesn't make sense.
