I was talking about booting to Command Prompt, not Safe Mode. Apples and oranges.

In those extremely few cases I've had a really stubborn file or folder that seems to be impossible to remove even when booting to Command Prompt, booting from WinPE or Windows install media instead, launching Command Prompt with SHIFT + F10, removing system and read only attributes with attrib command and finally using rd /s /q FOLDER_PATH or del FILE_PATH will for sure remove it / them.

Please correct me, Kari, if I'm wrong. I believe you use third-party drivers (at least Nvidia). What the difference between using a third party driver and a third party program or for that matter a "third=party" operating system like Linux where the kernel has an ntfs-3g driver? I'm not trying to pick a fight I just want to understand what you mean by "purity" in the context of computing. It is a concept that holds no meaning for me.

You can't be serious, comparing hardware device drivers to third party programs and tools? Or comparing using Linux to using third party software? Astonishingly ridiculous! I don't know where to start...

First, an NVidia driver from NVidia is not a "third party" driver. NVidia is the manufacturer of the GPU, their drivers to their devices are "first party" drivers, directly from manufacturer. Intel chipset drivers on my laptop are likewise "first party" drivers, directly from manufacturer of this motherboard.

Anyway, since quite some time already I've not installed any drivers manually. I let Windows Update do a few rounds after Windows has been installed and have been positively surprised how WU can find and install all drivers to my systems. I especially refuse to use any of these utterly nonsense "tools" that check if any of the drivers have an update available, WU is fully capable to notifying me and installing updated drivers. But: even if I would manually install NVidia or Intel drivers, or HP printer drivers for my printer, they would all be "first party", directly from device manufacturer.

What a silly comparison! Using completely unnecessary third party tools for tasks Windows is fully capable to do by itself is the same than using Linux. Yeah, sure :)

Once again I need to wipe my keyboard and put shirt and trousers to washing machine; your post made me laugh so that I spilled mouthful of whisky all over my keyboard and clothes.

With me being an old school purist I simply mean that I do not understand the need of third party software for something that is built-in in Windows, something Windows can do by itself with a few mouse clicks or simple commands.

... but that has nothing to do with the topic of this conversation of ours! Each and every user of course uses whatever method they prefer to install drivers, which can never be compared to using unnecessary third party software.

Using third party unnecessary software is not the same than using NVidia's drivers for their GPU, or using Linux.
