Hope you're right, Dave. Would be a nice way to end the week/month/quarter.

One thing I can recommend is to practise on a snooker table. Back when life was still OK, I had a snooker table at home. Although it was not full size, only a 9 feet table, but playing on it improved my pool game, too, simply because the pockets are so small on snooker table, smaller than on pool tables.

When the downhill started, it was first item to be sold. A shame...
I've heard of snooker, but never seen a table. Could it be that it's just not played in the US? I dunno.

We have a brand new Riverside Park here, complete with a Senior Citizen Center. Within that center, among other things, is a nice regulation pool table that you don't have to feed quarters. So, I'm going to practice today. So far, it's been vacant every time we've gone there.

I need to practice on my English (pool type), for sure and also to stroke, rather than whack, the cue ball. :) There are pros on Youtube who show and tell, so I'm going to watch a couple I like.

I will get there; just not real soon . . .

On a full size Snooker table, one almost need binoculars in order to see the tiny balls and the pockets in the other end of the "airstrip". :)

But yeah, it helps developing real pool skills. Eight-ball and similar is easy once you can call yourself a proficient amateur Snooker player.

I've had my fair share of Pool games and a lot of special skill practice, where goal was to make the moving balls stop within a few square inch area, so that next ball would be easy to pocket. :)
I can stop the cue ball on a dime, Slice, and hit the pocket every time. That ain't enough, though, since those shots come few and far between. My problem is figuring out where the silly cue will land on other types of shots; IOW, line up for the next shot.

In terms of ball skill, having snooker experience helps. However most people only play "bar rules" in pool e.g. you carry a free shot and only get on shot on the black, or variants of this.

League Rules (World Pool 8 rules) are much more sophisticated e.g. either the cue ball or an object ball must hit a cushion if you do not pot a ball, you can do combination shots ie pot your ball and the opposition's ball eg to free up a blocked pocket.

On any foul shot, you can return cue ball to baulk etc.

This make REAL Pool a much more tactical game - you have to use any free shot immediately or lose it if you pot your own ball, so you always have to think how to use your free shot.

Make a single mistake and you get punished.

I have played many young lads who are better potters than me in league rules, and beaten them simply due to better tactics.
Oh, yeah, Cereberus! There are definitely a lot of rules in league play. It took me awhile to learn them, and I'm still learning. I'm guessing "pot" is "sink" (puts it in the pocket). I like it when my opposition "sinks" the eight ball prematurely. :) Or scratches on the eight ball. Scratch = sinking the cue ball. Whoops!

Snooker developed in the days of the Bristish Raj in India, and was a game played by the gentlemen Officers.

Legend has it it gets its name for when a not so gentlemanly officer ran the cue ball behind one of the coloured balls so other player could not get a direct shot at a red (same as a TOTAL in Pool).

The other player exclaimed "You are a regular Snooker" - Snooker was a derogatory term for the Indian Troop serving in the Army - and that is how that game got its name.
As an aside to the above main theme of this thread above, I today upgraded my laptop to 16299 and it took less than an hour even with lots of programs etc. I do not understand how a simple update in a Hyper-V VM cant takeover 6 hours - Hyper-V is not that slow on my PC and I allow plenty of RAM etc.

Hmmm, wonder if that's where "I've been snookered" came from? :)
