Yeah. I do not care what anybody says - I never use windows.old, and I would like an option not to create it, or to create it on another drive at least - even if I have to confirm ten times I do not want it, and I accept all the issues etc. The option could be buried in "advanced advanced" options, and would only be actioned if there was not enough space.
If you have ever had an upgrade fail and roll back then you have used windows.old.

Exactly! But it also has a bigger purpose than just reverting to previous working OS version. Either way a full disc image is far from same thing and that serves for a completely different purpose, though from a user perspective it may look like the same thing, but it's not.
What is that "Bigger purpose", bigger than full system backup ?

It's not about what we users want, but about what Windows want and need in order to achieve what the user want as the end result, which is a successful OS upgrade that kept all your applications, personal files and most settings or a successful revert back to how things were before Windows made any modifications.

Even when update can't be done just because of it ?

It can be done, just stick more free space in the usb port --> done!

This whole thread is getting bloody silly.

For the third time, I am only saying I would like an option not to create it in special cases on small capacity drives as you need to reserve a lot of space eg up to 10GB to enable upgrades. Of course, you have to understand the risk.

Frankly, responses about how important it is are basically pompous claptrap. We all know why and what function it does but making it 100% mandatory and only on c drive effectively reduces my tablet capacity by nearly 33%.

Even if option was introduced, it would be good to only not create it if inadequate space. This would protect vast majority.

Anyway, this is all navel contemplation as MS are unlikely to do it anyway, as it it does not involve Edge, Emojis, 3D or Ninja cats.

Wrong - that space is for temporary files during installation. If you do not have enough space on C drive for windows.old, plugging in a USB port DOES NOT HELP!
