Well this upgrade took 5 hours. I have a new theory :

Size of Upgrade multipled by Installation Time is Constant.

No - my original post was about 32GB drives, and difficulty in upgrading if you do not have space for windows.old. You obviously have jumped in half way through conversation and are making assumptions.

In fact, same could happen with any drive if filled up enough, but generally that is largely data, so more easy to move. On my 32 GB drive, the space is all taken by programs - I store data on onedrive or sd cards (sd card for non critical data).

Anyway, if you have 500+GB C drives, then that is most likely because you keep all you data on C drive. If you moved that to another drive, I bet the C drive is much smaller, keeping image backup lean and mean. Of course, you still need to backup data anyway, but better ways than using image backups to do this.

BTW - Windows.old is only transient - image backups are permanent. Not only that the rollback functionality is not as robust as it should be - I trust Macrium image backups but not rollback anyway.
No I am not making any assumptions and I did read the whole conversation. If the only issue is that the drive is too small, then use a thumb-drive or external HDD to temporary give Windows the needed space.

Windows.old is very important in order to maintain integrity in Windows, applications, user files, before and after upgrade. A disk image won't help you maintain this integrity for the updated OS, when your backup is in fact the old OS.

If windows.old is used to go back in case of unsuccessful update, it's back to old OS too but this time with even less space.

Yeah. I do not care what anybody says - I never use windows.old, and I would like an option not to create it, or to create it on another drive at least - even if I have to confirm ten times I do not want it, and I accept all the issues etc. The option could be buried in "advanced advanced" options, and would only be actioned if there was not enough space.

Had to update my account login to move up from 16291 because of password change and two-factor authentication. First time automatic update has stuttered on me recently, but for a very good reason. Downloading on both test PCs now.

Exactly! But it also has a bigger purpose than just reverting to previous working OS version. Either way a full disc image is far from same thing and that serves for a completely different purpose, though from a user perspective it may look like the same thing, but it's not.
