They have not done their homework properly this time
What have you done to solve this issue?

Make sure your system is in an optimal state before even attempting to upgrade, or there is more than 50% chance it will fail.

Try THIS and also remove or disable any hardware that is non critical for system operation.

Had to bring back 281 using MR as my brother turned computer off at wrong time but installing 288 now. It was working first time but I couldn't make ISO out of it.

Nor could I for some reason. Next build perhaps, don't really need one.

At 6.30pm update became available....10 minutes after start modem started flashing wildly and stop start of the download continued for the next five and a half hours....by then absolutely knackered frustrated and way past my bedtime called it a day.

Had contacted my cable operator early in the process who informed me there was a fault but nevertheless as it seemed to be installing somewhat erratically kept it going.....disappointedly woke this morning to find all was in vain....am now reinstalling.

This was NOT an M$ fault.

    1. Do a full disc cleanup of C drive (including system files)
    2. Delete all files and folders from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads
    3. Run SFC /SCANNOW
    4. Disable all startup items Using Task Manager
    5. Disable all non-MS services using System Configuration and then reboot when prompted
    6. Disable any Antivirus you have enabled
    7. Run Windows Update
    8. Keep fingers crossed
    9. After successful install, re-enable AV, Startup Items and finally the non-MS services and reboot
Ok I followed every single step in this list, but unfortunately to no avail.

Disabled every single service except for the Microsoft and Intel ones.
Ran all the disk checks which all reported zero errors.
Also previously uninstalled SQL Server just because someone guys online said that may cause issues.

This build must be garbage, my system is very clean and it's a brand new Surface Pro 2017 with 1Tb disk.

Well it has failed to install for me. I get to restart now, and nothing happens - just reboots immediately and says in update history and says it has failed to install.

I am now in process of creating an iso to try again. If this works, it is not the downloaded files specifically are the issue but how UUP works once it has downloaded files. This strongly suggests returning to install.esd is the way forward.

Reading the posts here, MS should be hanging their head in shame,. If we as seasoned Insiders are experiencing so many difficulties in upgrading to 162881, then it clearly shows that UUP is not a robust delivery method.

I have just created a feedback to MS for users here to upvote if they wish

EDIT - UUPTOISO failed at last hurdle :-(.

According to your post (as I read and understand it), you restarted before making ISO and upgrade then failed. If you do not make ISO before clicking Restart now, and upgrade then fails, the UUP folder is no longer intact and the UUPtoISO process most often fails.

I have repeatedly reminded you geeks that you should do the ISO before clicking Restart now, and only if the button really says Restart now. If it says Install, you need first click it and let WU install the update (read: create UUP folder content). When done, the button changes to Restart now, at which point you should make the ISO.
