I have Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 530 and Windows 10 on a Dell XPS 8920. The KB4038788 update ran smoothly on both machines, but had the undesirable effect of adding "Updates to Internet Explorer 11’s navigation bar with search box". This not only annoyed me, but several others that I found through online searches.
I dumped and hid KB4038788 on the Inspiron 530, but kept it (temporarily) on the XPS 8920 (where I am writing this reply) I may still dump the update. Internet Explorer crashed several times while I was trying to post this reply.
If Microsoft wants to add 'features' to long-established programs, then they should allow those of us who annoyed by these changes to revert back to the formats that we know and love.
Just right-click on the file tab top left and uncheck "show tabs on a separate row".

I tried everything I could think of, well except for uninstalling the update and reinstalling it. I was just getting ready to do just that when I fixed the issue. Strangely enough the way I was able to fix it was by going into my Asus router and changing my DNS servers to google DNS

Yep simply set them to:
DNS server 1 - 8.8.8.8
DNS server 2 - 8.8.4.4

RFS wrote, "Just right-click on the file tab top left and uncheck "show tabs on a separate row". " Changing one undesirable page layout for a more undesirable page layout is not in keeping with my goal of leaving the page the way I like it.
