I think "dogfood" in general references some canines' predilection for autocoprophagia. Similarly, the general user reaction to the nature of Vista when it was released on machines that were inadequate to run it well.

Vista was good on my then current machine, but when I upgraded, it went to heck in a handbasket. :) Same thing happened with Windows ME.
