I got it to work it took a few tries. Took forever to install and then I got off the insider preview right away.
Glad you got it sorted. It took quite a while on my two test systems as well.

It's 16299.15 and 16299.15 is the FCU build. There will be updates later, of course. Even if by some fluke Microsoft decided to release an altered version on October 17 (not going to happen), there would be no reason that version couldn't be installed over 16299.15.

But the Insider Preview Fast Ring method of upgrading to FCU will no longer work after the first RS4 build is released. That could be as soon as today. Slow Ring should still work.

Quick query - For the average W10 user getting this Fall Creators Update from next week (via Windows Update), will you get keeping all your files etc in same places and will you have to re-install any programs again such as Firefox, CCleaner, office suite etc? Thanks.

It will keep all your files and settings. And keep all your 3rd party apps you've installed. Only 2 I've run across are Classic Shell and 8gadgetpack, which just needed a quick click to repair. But, bottom line, all your stuff and apps/programs will still be there. Always a good idea to make a full image backup of your system first before something major like this.

It should not have any impact on data and installed applications. I've installed it on two systems without incident.

I used the leaked MCT to make install media for 16299.15 and used it on my test machine. That has Office 2007 and CCleaner 5.25 on it. Both were unaffected by the upgrade. In other tests I installed Movie Maker in 1703 then upgraded to 1709 - that too came through without a problem.

In previous upgrades some packages have needed upgrades, some third-party AVs, Classic Shell and the like, and the 'Windows 7 games hacks' have all been mentioned by others as requiring upgrades and/or reinstalling.

Thanks to last 3 posters for your replies. Good to know everything will stay the same. I use Classic Shell but I can sort that out OK. And I'll be backing everything up off course, just in case anything should go wrong! Thanks again.

I have all this software installed, and lost nothing, but some UWP(Store) Apps needed to be updated, which you can either do from the Store, will happen when you open them the 1st time(if you try to run something right after upgrading), or Windows will get around to it, when it does maintenance.

You can probably add the old Oberon Windows Vista/W7 games to the list of programs that an update will 'delete'. That was my experience last time around... easily fixed though.
