Yeah Scandinavian countries are great in this respect.

In US, they often only have one or two providers in a region, as their original telecoms systems were never fully integrated as US is so massive.

In Europe, most countries (each much smaller than US, coupled with a higher population density) had a single state telecom system infrastructure, and most have been privatised with normally quite strict rules encouraging competition, it means you can be anywhere in country practically - even in quite remote locations, but choose whatever provider you wish.

This is less true with 4G mobiles e.g. in UK all claim 95% coverage, but that is disengenous as it is 95% of population, not area, so out in the sticks, reception is often non-existent. Also, even in towns, you get lots of blackspots. So the 95% of population is a gross exaggeration - I would bet realistically it is around 70%!

The other advantage the UK has is the well developed cable TV network by Virgin Media which also supplies the fastest package available 200Mb/sec. All other providers have to rely on the BT infrastructure which is not as fast.

There was a campaign here couple of years ago to bring internet, IP and mobile phone to remote areas and indeed only tunnels are without it but it's all on low scale speed wise. In other words it's there but barely.
