Compatibility appraiser? Do you think that might relate to creators update then and MS sussing whether to send it our way? I am still surprised windows update has not sent it even though I got the privacy settings kb at beginning of July

Yes, we're all seeing that. It seems to be something to do with the Compatibility Appraiser, see my post #8

So, it's not a ghost from the past... and it's related to upcoming CU upgrade!

Just one month before next upgrade's going to be released!!!

Twice a month we have the pleasure to find our PCs updated even if they don't work...
And then, the best : Upgrade!!! Means a new system twice a year! What a lucky user!!!
When my machine begins to work as a machine... ta daa... and The New Upgrade comes!!!
I'll keep trying to make it work as I want, for all my life! Thank you M$!

I upgraded (not clean install) to CU (1703) on March. Everything went fine but a minor issue with Taskbar apps.
Also, I had to reconfigure OS to meet my needs, turning off Services & Scheduled Tasks, registry tweaks etc., the loss of which means time, much time and patience. And because I do not intent to dedicate my life to PCs, I decided to go back to previous (1607) version. It took more than one hour for CU upgrade to be completed and less than three minutes to restore! Miraculous!

So, I stay with 1607 until I feel that is me the one who needs a new OS and not M$.

Thank you Bree and all guys here for info!

PS: Sorry for being off topic...

I'd guess it's more likely to be looking at compatibility for the upcoming FCU, but yes basically.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've not found it a struggle. My machine took the free upgrade from Windows 7 and each of the subsequent versions as updates, not clean installs. Its more stable now on 1703 than it's ever been before (BSOD were regular in Win7, even after an OEM factory reset).

KB4039396 is not available via Windows Update. It's a standalone update only available via Microsoft Update Catalog.
