I'm running Nightly 58.0a1 and using Ghostery to block ads. From regular Firefox to Nightly, to Firefox beta and then back to Nightly, it has worked with no problems.

Yes but Ghostery has been updated to the new code required by FF version 57 a lot of other extensions haven't so they show up as LEGACY. I only regularly use three extensions and it's sods law that two of them are LEGACY

That's why I was suggesting Ghostery as an alternative to AB+, although I suspect the latter and many other addons will be ready by the time Firefox 57.0 goes prime time. :)

    I updated to firefox 56.
In options/general under "perfomance", it has a box with a checkmark in it next to "use recommended performance settings". If i uncheck it, it opens up and shows "content process limit" and it is set to 1. It is sort of greyed out and I cannot increase it or change it from 1. Should I be able to increase it to 4 say or something else? Why can't I change it - is it due to legacy add-ons?

Fx 56.0.1 is out. Yes it is due to legacy Adons. Fx 57 Beta is really Stable it it has pretty decent extensions, I am using the ones below and they are all I need:
