What I mean is, that in my opinion it is OK that Microsoft kills some features that can be done with free third party alternatives. Windows does not have to be a complete solution, it just needs to offer a platform to do about everything.
Absolutely agree. Get rid of the clutter and focus on what an OS is all about. Let others do the application parts. :)

Only point of concern could be that 3rd party tools take this as an opportunity to introduce a charge ie big boys form a cartel which will be easier to do now?
I really doubt this would happen but.....

Again, the following is just my personal opinion without any factual base:
I am absolutely 100% sure that if suddenly there were no free third party options to make image backups, next feature upgrade would introduce a new W10 native backup.
What I mean is that Microsoft takes care of these basic needs of us users. Backup is important but it can be done today for free, using third party tools. That's why Microsoft sees no need to continue including native backup tool in W10. But, if situation changed, if there suddenly were no free imaging tools available, I am sure we would get a native imaging tool again in Windows.

Here's a little MS site than kinda says they'll probably call it "Fall", but who knows....

Also an interesting excerpt. Bye-Bye, Win 7 legacy System Image Backup!
System Image Backup (SIB) Solution
We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.
Thanks, TC. This is a good one, but I don't find a date on it; I've found other references to Fall Update with May, June and July dates, though.

Wyn, at the very end:

I have always used the native Windows tool to create images of the system, (last night I created two images, one of Creators Update and another one of build 16257) seems very easy to use for the average user, it takes very little time to create the Image and even less restoring the system, I never had or felt the need to use another tool.

Only one minor point - initial release was not only released as free upgrade. If you did not have a qualifying licence, you still has to pay.

Wyn, at the very end:
Well, duhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I bookmarked it for later reading and didn't scroll down that far. Thanks!

Please notice, this is just my personal, subjective opinion:
I think Microsoft's policy is right. Windows does not have to include every possible feature and tool. As third party applications to do some tasks can be found for free (like Macrium Reflect for backups), it is unnecessary to natively add these features to Windows.
Windows native backup reached its end of life. It is / was not as easy to use as free third party alternatives. In my opinion, it was a right decision to kill it and let users choose a third party alternative instead.
I respect your opinion and know you posted with a proper motive. However, I disagree on ease of use. At least I didn't find it complicated. Just but a few clicks really. Just a sophisticated copy and paste function really.
Wasn’t sure why it wasn’t included with 8/8.1. Guessing MS didn’t want to spend the money on further development. Seems like that’s when the competition honed in on that market.
I am absolutely 100% sure that if suddenly there were no free third party options to make image backups, next feature upgrade would introduce a new W10 native backup
I’ll predict that’s exactly what will happen. No more free 3rd party. Hopefully MS is developing a new one.

Couldn't agree more.
