I changed my Windows Insiders setting to Skip Ahead yesterday and the first time it did not stick. Here is how I finally got it to stick. Open Windows Insiders settings and make the change to Skip Ahead. This is important. Do not close Windows Insiders settings.
    Open Registry Editor to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability.
On the right, modify or create a new string value "ContentType".
Set it to the following value.
Skip = Skip ahead to RS_PRERELEASE branch.
Now, modify the string value "Ring". Set it to WIF to switch the update branch to the Fast Ring.
With Windows Insiders settings still open restart Windows 10.

Edit: You have to work fast in Regedit as noted by @CountMike. See his tip.
Edit: @f14tomcat has a good tip on how to work faster in Regedit. See his tip.

There are clear rules as when recovery partition size should / will be increased:

    • If the partition is less than 500 MB, it must have at least 50 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is 500 MB or larger, it must have at least 320 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is larger than 1 GB, we recommend that it should have at least 1 GB free.

(From UEFI/GPT-based hard drive partitions | Microsoft Docs)
Thanks for this and your previous post info, Kari. Weird indeed, especially "Not always". That's the stumper.

Even though mine is a UEFI system, I made the mistake of using the MBR scheme. Basically too much in a hurry.

But it looks like I may have been better off this way for now until this gets corrected. I want to convert to GPT partition scheme, so this info and reading material is welcomed. I'm thinking of waiting until AU is released to redo.

Thanks, look like it stuck this time but have to be fast at regedit because it changes back if you don't do it on time. First time I missed dedline and it didn't work but next time I opened regedit before changing in settings.

Thanks for that info, tracit99. :)

I just selected Ship ahead recently the last time. I think I'm still in?

The Insider system has its glitches.

I've been a Windows Insider since Day One, October 1st 2014, with several MS accounts, and joined Insider Program for IT Professionals the day it was launched earlier this year with two different Azure AD accounts.

However, booting my laptop one day less than two weeks ago, I signed in to Windows using my normal sign in Azure AD / Insider Pro account and immediately got a notification that my Windows Insider account needs attention. I had to verify the account, verification was successful, then got a prompt asking if I want to keep getting Insider builds. Clicking Yes I apparently "re-joined" Insider Pro program with the same Azure AD account, and now my Insider status as seen for instance in Feedback Hub is shown as if I only joined that day:

All my previous feedback, achievements and so on were gone.

I meant to Skip ahead thing but yes, even in the past I got kicked out of insider builds or dropped to slow couple of times.

You could, if wanted, export that key to somewhere easy to get to, after you've changed it, and just click on it to make the .reg entry without opening regedit and manually modifying it. Much quicker.
