Microsoft Releases Windows 10 S ISO to Developers, Education Customers

    Last Updated: 15 Aug 2017 at 09:11

Microsoft announced today that it will make Windows 10 S available to developers and education customers. But sorry, Windows Insiders and other enthusiasts: It will not make Windows 10 S available for testing to consumers.

Windows 10 S should be live on MSDN by the time you read this. You will need a (paid, expensive) MSDN subscription to access this software.

“We’re releasing [Windows 10 S] today to developers because we want to be sure they are testing Windows 10 S,” a Microsoft statement notes. “We especially want EDU-focused developers to continue to innovate and make apps that teachers and students would use from the Windows Store.”

It would be nice if it was available to everyone.

Tried to download it since yesterday, been cancelling every try because of download speed; I'm getting all other downloads from MSDN / VS with max speed but this W10 S comes at max 300 Kbps, download manager telling me "2 days left".

Oh oh Kari, that sounds like a 56k dial up modem to me. Any way I can't afford the subscription price.

I have 100 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up broadband line, it's just this one download that does not go over 300 Kbps. Have tried at least a dozen times during the past 24 hours.

Downloading several ISO's from MSDN as I type this. I'm showing 2.7 MB/sec @ 32% with 19 min left to completion for 10-S. Windows 10 Multiple editions, 10-S, and Enterprise show (updated July 2017) Released a couple of days ago on the 26th I believe. They have the last cumulative update rolled into them. The one I want "Education" doesn't have the new July update version up yet.

Hmm, I wonder if 10-S is a replacement for the Education version?

    No.

W10 S is a special edition which can only run UWP apps. Education will remain as it is, quite a lot of its users have need for legacy Win32 applications.

As W10 S only allows UWP apps (native & downloaded from Store), it naturally can't run any other browser than Edge (at the moment at least, although W10 S might just be the trigger needed to force other browsers to make UWP versions). The same with for instance AV and firewall; there aren't many if any alternatives for Defender available as UWP app.

At the same time it makes Windows a bit more secure. OEM bundles cannot include any pre-installed "test this" and "try that" bloatware, users can't install from unreliable sources. Only allowed software source is Windows Store.

OKI makes sense. Getting an error when trying to copy the mounted ISO to my install thumb drive. The file is there though? May have to re download my ISO I guess?
