I've had 2 failures at 33% (after the first restart) with these messages in "installed update history"
Both failures were related to 'SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION', the 1st flagged "ctoss2k.sys" and the 2nd "ha20x2k.sys"
Both those files are present in C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wdma_emu.inf_amd64_19c9375720103803\Win2K_XP\amd64 and in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers.
I suspect those files are associated with the Creative sound card I have in my system. Creative are no longer updating drivers for that card :-(
This is the first time I've seen those file flagged (I've had failures with past updates) but 16241 installed without any drama at the first attempt.
sfc /scannow found and fixed some files when I ran it after the 2nd failure.
I did opt into (rs-prerelease.)
I have never requested those two apps listed under "feature updates" nor do I see them in "Programs" or "Apps & Features"
About to let it try for the 3rd update attempt. I did create an ISO, so if this 3rd attempt crashes I'll mount that and try an update from it.
all I know I came back up stairs and it was done on its own OMG
Ran setup.exe but it got to 55% complete (The screen is extremely bare bones but good looking). Your computer will restart momentarily but I cancel (CTRL-ALT-DEL - b ring up task manager). Now it says it is installing again. The error codes on Update History change every time I look at them. Now the error code is 0x80240034.
I'm almost certain I will need to do a clean install of 16251 but in the meantime AMD just released this updated Crimson driver
Introducing Radeon™ Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.2
and it's a peach. So I'm imaging the current state of 16241 with this driver now. Then I guess I'll run setup.exe from a mounted virtual DVD but choose to do a clean install. This will likely fail and I will have to boot off the DVD but it will be entertaining - for a geek!
Well, the weird issue with Grand Theft Auto V is still present in this build, which doesn't give me a lot of hope for the public release. Guess I'll do the "skip ahead" thing and hope for the best.
Too late now, I already made ISO and cleaned everything. What I do is to delete everything from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ just before download starts and all that's left is current build. I copy full address and put in UUP to ISO, once it's all finished and asks for restart, I press enter and it makes ISO. Only after copying ISO to a safe place (backup disk) I let it install. I also used to make a bootable USB with new ISO and it helped when few builds ago it didn't want to install new build normally.
And it failed again, this time claiming the fault was due to CTHWIUT.SYS (yes, the filename was rendered in all caps.) I haven't traced that file, yet
I gave up on WU and installed from the iso I'd built, using Kari's tut "When Insider build ... " to do the upgrade. Apparently a few things have changed since the tut was written, but I found my way through without any crashes or failures.
System protection was enabled, and Firefox was still my default browser. :) Those 2 items survived the update to 16241 also, but not in earlier updates.
With every build, less custom settings are removed but stupid arrows on desktop icons still show up and have to remove them myself.
