Installing an insider build or doing a clean install is "chicken"?. Actually, I find this pretty silly. I personally push all my softwaare and hardware to the max (except not being a gamer yet - until I get that Ryzen Processor ) I find very mentally challenging, And I have not had to replace or flash my mobo for more than 3 years.

Being a Prototype Electronics Engineer for two decades before I retired, and now a Lover of Computers, I find it challenging to load Insider Upgrades and look for "bugs". Yes a few builds just did not load for me, but the majority like 199 and this 232 builds loaded with no problems. Sure I had to "tweak" them but it was a challenge to find the minor fixes to make the build almost perfect for me !!

By the way - ALL were Insider Downloads, no DVD .iso

If the UUP method fails, then I find "chicken" by ISO install rather silly also. What good is it to MS if the last build is sitting on a device? I don't think they would continue to study that telemetry, would they? Doubt that, but please see me to the end point here.

Although I'm grateful that Kari and others worked hard to create the UUP to ISO method, I highly suggest MS offer the ISO to those Insiders where UUP failed. Make them prove failure if need be with an install log recording failure. I would think MS would read those logs for the source of failure anyway, unless they already do. Would anyone know?

That might work, but by the time you go thru all that, the next build would be out. So most like not worth it. If I can get as far as the download, first step is the ISO, before going any further. Then if failure, I have a plan "B". IMO.

well said. I agree completely. It is likely Microsoft get update failure logs automatically if telemetry is working but why get the full context (special configuration i.e. multiboot configurations) directly from the user or used tester.

I have to strongly disagree with some opinions presented in this thread.

Are you guys really saying that a "true" insider accepts his / her faith, if upgrade repeatedly fails a "true" insider does not make an ISO and upgrade from it? If even ISO upgrade repeatedly fails, a "true" insider" skips that build alltogether because clean installing it is somehow against being a Windows Insider?

A "true" insider in other words stops being an insider at point when no new builds can't be upgraded anymore due WU or other issues, because starting from scratch with a clean install or an ISO upgrade would somehow be against Insider spirit?

    What a ********! Can't believe what I am reading!

In my opinion anyone saying it's against some unwritten Insider rules to do ISO, upgrade from ISO or clean install is simply wrong. I find it extremely offensive when I see posts about "that's not what being Insider is", as these members had the power and superior knowledge to tell me what I am allowed to test, what Microsoft wants me to test.

How on earth can anyone think that Microsoft is only, solely interested in our experience in upgrade process? As if they were not at all interested in how clean install works, how upgrading from ISO works, how image customization and deployment works (BTW, that requires clean install on technician machine). That all Microsoft wants to know is how upgrade works and if new features are OK.

Every new announcement thread, some "I'm wiser than you" tells me how wrong it is that I clean install to be able to test customization and deployment scenarios.

What really is a chicken's way out, to use that expression I saw was used here, is to think and post that "OK, I am unable to upgrade. Waiting the next build".

    latest Win10 Insider build

I agree. There is absolutely nothing wrong with updating via iso. I do it most of the time, because I have problems with windows update, and have lost all faith in it. I give it one chance, if it doesn't work, I go straight to iso. I am here to test the OS, and couldn't care less about the method of update, if it's a problem. If I saw them actually putting some effort into trying to fix it, then I might be more inclined to work with them on it. But I see NO evidence that they have tried to improve it at all, so I am not going to waste my time with it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with updating via an iso. The object is to spend as much time searching for bugs with each build as is reasonable. How is that possible if you always allow yourself to get caught up in the upgrading process? I think some people are putting the cart before the horse here.

Sorry, but even your post amendment doesnít make sense IMO. Yeah, "IF" one can get it to download first of all. How many times have we seen "Stuck at 30%" then fail? Or "Hung at 78%" then fail? And continuing on after that clicking the "Try again" button a million times only to be denied. And/or other failures.

Like I said, I'm grateful that Kari and others worked hard to create the UUP to ISO method. Absolutely not putting down this method whatsoever. Iím quite sure Kari and others will admit that itís not 100% fail-proof. Iíve seen some that say it didnít work or the ISO failed upon install. Not very often, but it happens.

e.g. During this last upgrade install I performed the method which failed the first time. Double checking my input I found no error on my part. The second attempt did succeed. Now I sit and wonder if the ISO is good for install. Never had to use one for clean install or use it to upgrade, but just for the sake of learning I may try it if time allows. I shall try DISM to see if that works first.

ďBy the time you go thru all that, the next build would be outĒ? What? In this instant day and age? MS has our Insider email addresses with digital license linked to the account. Within minutes of a failure we could sign into an Insider page to start an automated process to show failure and they would send a link to an ISO download or even expose one on that page. In fact no one canít get to any Insider ISOs unless they are a registered Insider.
