Is that because they are somehow seen "activated" thru the Host?
No - even if you install it on a host unactivated, it gets updates.

All part of MS's plan to get everybody on W10.

Just can't personalize it and that stuff, I guess. Interesting.

Exactly. As far as I know, missing personalization options are the only restriction. Applying a theme file works, though, giving a practical workaround.

The biggest restriction is inability to set active hours ans similar.

Also another question: I have to RMA my motherboard soon and have to switch to my old one for a week or more. That one I deleted as a Device but don't want to go thru the hoops to reactivate it again for just such short time. I was thinking to run it un-activated during that time but still want to use same credentials.
If you have a Microsoft account, and you have previously activated through it, your new hardware should activate automatically, imo. You can activate up to 10 devices per account--but the main activation denominator as it appears to me is the Microsoft account. (They changed the activation routines some time ago.)

This is not correct. Activation is not automatic. To activate on a different mobo., you have to have linked the digital licence to MS account on old mobo first (version 1607 or higher), then use activation troubleshooter on new mobo to MANUALLY transfer digital licence to new mobo.
