According to this Wikipedia article it was Symantec that bought Peter Norton Computing in 1990, which at the time Norton was a DOS utilities developer, not AV. At the time Symantec developed AV for Macintosh. After acquiring Norton, Symantec developed AV for the PC market.

Origins

In May 1989, Symantec launched Symantec Antivirus for the Macintosh (SAM). SAM 2.0, released March 1990, incorporated technology allowing users to easily update SAM to intercept and eliminate new viruses, including many that didn't exist at the time of the program's release.

In August 1990 Symantec acquired Peter Norton Computing from Peter Norton. Norton and his company developed various DOS utilities including the Norton Utilities, which did not include antivirus features. Symantec continued the development of acquired technologies. The technologies are marketed under the name of "Norton", with the tagline "from Symantec". Norton's crossed-arm pose, a registered U.S. trademark, was traditionally featured on Norton product packaging. However, his pose was later moved to the spine of the packaging, and eventually dropped altogether.

By early 1991, U.S. computers were invaded by hundreds of foreign virus strains and corporate PC infection was becoming a serious problem. Symantec's Norton Group launched Norton AntiVirus 1.0 (NAV) for PC and compatible computers. Ads for the product, with suggested retail $129, featured Norton in his crossed-arm pose, wearing a pink shirt and surgical mask covering his nose and mouth.
With the 1998 version 5.0 update, SAM was renamed Norton AntiVirus (NAV) for Macintosh.

Not updating, like 199
so another wait

I attempted to go through the posts here trying to perhaps find a common thread in the systems that did not update. Found that a lot of you didn't fill out your system specs. Please do so.

With that said, some of you may want to clean out 3rd party AV and apps to see if your systems update. A stab in the dark, but it may be worth a try. I know of one member that recently changed to 3rd party AV and is now having problems updating, whereas that member didn't in prior builds.

TBO, I realize I'm an oddball around here in that I use no 3rd party software at all and use Defender, yet my systems update and have very few problems. It’s not that I’m against anyone using 3rd party. Of course, it’s anyone’s choice. I’m just attempting to find a solution that may affect some. I realize there may be other reasons too.

Yeah, I was a big used of Norton Utilities on my DOS-based machines back in the day. And when I got hit with a 'lizard' iurus (more likely called a worm now, I think) that screwed up all of my executables, it was Symantec's NAV 4.0.x that saved my derriere, although every single self-extracting .ZIP file I had stopped self extracting properly (the contents were still undamaged, luckily - that was when I stopped relying on self-extracting .ZIP files).

Pretty sure I still have a few copies of Norton Utilities on 3.5" diskettes lying around in storage somewhere.

I can only read of such things. It's before my time. I was given a Gateway 2000 with 95 on it. Absolutely new nothing about computers, but started learning how to use them for a construction business. Now I know enough to be dangerous.

Anywho, 95 was short lived, then onto 98, then 98SE. Dabbled in DOS to repair a few things, but that was about it. I use command line only with strict directions that I can follow. My hat off to you that know this stuff. :)

With regards to HG's post above, the only 3rd party software I have installed when I updated to 16215 are Chrome, Macrium and MiniTool Partition Wizard. The upgrade took a bit longer (59mins on first attempt) but it went through smoothly.

I have no 3rd party SW that has anything to do with system or are running on auto and all the time and still it wouldn't install directly but did from .ISO I made at that time. With exactly same setup there was no problems updating for very long time.

Thanks for that info, guys. I realize it may be any number of reasons. MS's end, System architecture, BIOSs, 3rd party AV, and heaven only knows. I see Kari is still plugging away at a solution, but it looks like he can't get one of his systems to fail? As of last night anyway. Since the last outsider, I have installed Macrium, Opera, Wi-Fi Tool, and Speed Fan. Also installed a Netgear extender.
