Problem with old laptops like mine is they will speed up some with SSD, but the drive has to be plugged into an older and slower SATA version than it's designed for. And the amount of RAM the laptop will accept likely doesn't approach current levels. Mine has 4G installed and can't accommodate more than that.
Unless you have a really fast pc and superfast SSD, you will barely be able to detect difference between SATA II and SATA III.

Updates/upgrades are slow, admittedly with these veteran systems, but in day-to day use, they are no slower with Windows 10 than the XP/Vista/Windows 7 they were designed for and originally had installed.

Such is the improvement in Memory handling, and the minimal design methodology of modern Windows.
I know, Fafhrd, but at the same time, we didn't know just how slow those systems were, since they were so much faster than their predecessors. :)

Hmmm, on second thought, could I maybe upgrade the RAM to something faster? Probably not . . . but if I could . . .

With Windows 10 Insider Build 16215. It didn't want anything lesser, it seems.

This while discusion is pointless. It varies according to local country customs, work practices etc. Hell, I have tinesheeted where people regard Sat/Sun as beginning of week, where end of week, and even Sun start, Sat end. The solution to whole issue is to allow user to select which day is start of week. No more to be discussed surely?
I hope not, Cereberus! The discussion, in my not so humble opinion, has degraded to "looking down" on someone who doesn't share my/your/their views on when the week starts. It is, in fact, irrelevant, since every week has seven days. And that's a fact, Jack!

Try installing 32GB of RAM and an SSD in your old clunker. It will run well on Windows 10. Or better don't do anything and install <gasp> Linux on your old machine.
I'll have to look to see how much RAM the dv9700 has. I did put an SSD drive in it when I thought the original HDD might be bad.

No Linux, Marty! I've thought many times that I'd like to try Linux, but haven't gotten there yet.

Agree. I have a Vista era hp laptop with 4Gb memory into which I placed two 512 Tb hard drives. It is the most reliable of my insider machines. It's a little slower than newer computers, but barely detectable.

Well, you can, but it's not pretty. 16215 in a VM.
