Nothing to worry about if you already activated

Microsoft has deactivate all of the pre-release keys given to Insiders for the Windows 10 Insider program. Basically, this means If someone doesn't have the Insider Preview currently installed on their PC, they will not be able to do a fresh install of Windows 10 Insider Preview and activate it with a pre-release key, even if it's build 10240.

Well, my hard drive started making a clicking sound and crashed , so I reinstalled my windows insider build and logged in with my name and password and no activation. I have to say I was angry because I went through the build updates since the beginning and I feel if you or an insider you should be able to activate.

MS did this so it can fully test the upgrade process.

    Hi there

I've probably posted this AD NAUSEAM -- but what is it about people that they can't spend 30 mins or so making a BACKUP IMAGE -- for Gawd's sake you can do this at night, while watching TV, while doing all sorts of other things.

It's a NO BRAINER so I'm totally amazed how people --even on this excellent Forum STILL DON'T TAKE REGULAR BACKUPS --especially with things like Windows builds which can always go wrong.

30 Mins max restore would have fixed your problem --even on a NEW HDD -- and Windows would STILL be activated.

    Cheers

It's only temporary. After the 29th, you will have the option to continue in the Insider Program so new keys will be issued. Or the old ones turned back on again. They are gearing up the download servers for the 29th. People signing up downloading and installing the Preview now would just complicate that. The last official ISO released was 10166 so anybody wanting get 10240 would have to upgrade from 10166 to 10240, Officially that is, not counting the home made 10240 ISO's on the go. That's just the way it is for now.

I did a clean setup today and I have activated it just fine with the default key.

If that PC was activated with that key in the past, it's registered on the activation server along with a hardware hash for that system. In that case technically, its already activated, so your good to go. A clean install on hardware that never had 10 on it would be refused. Just mu guess. Previously activated systems may still be able to activate on a reinstall. Some members are able to activate and some aren't. It may also depend on whether the original install was an upgrade or clean install. Like I said though, just guessing. Only Microsoft knows who's good and who's not.

I installed 10166 from an earlier esd a couple of days (16th) after the server deactivation, and the following day, this unactivated 10166 was upgraded to an unactivated 10240 (reporting Prodkey -3V66T - the correct key for Pro). No matter which activation method I tried, it failed.

Last night (18th) I reset this 10240 because it had some problems, and left it alone. Today I restarted it from hibernation, it continued the setup and it was activated (still with -3V66T).

So either the activation servers have come online or something to do with the reset triggered the activation.

I already have an activated 10240 by upgrades since 10130 which is a bit flaky, so I wanted to try a reinstall, but the lack of an activation service put that on hold until now. I am currently creating a vhd of this system, using DisktoVHD, which seems just as portable and quick to make and be the basis of a WintoGo system or as a transferable backup, with the added benefits that it can be upgraded and modified as you go.

For the record, I have just did another clean setup without entering any key and Windows activated by itself. That is, what I call a service, no bother looking for a key during reinstall anymore. :)

EDIT: I have just upgraded another PC from 8.1 to 10 without a key and it activated, then I did a clean setup without a key and it activated just fine.. All is as it should be in the world of activations.
