Firstly, I'm thinking code via the driver is sent to the firmware of the printer that gives it the go ahead that it's a genuine cartridge. Not sure. Somehow it keeps track of ink level. I'm thinking by the per page and page size printed, which is not totally accurate cuz that estimating how much ink that takes. It's not like the cartridge has a physical gauge like a gas tank. Somehow data is being stored somewhere. I'd search the registry with your printer model to see what that returns.
Might be a bit to complicated and too much for this purpose but this is how I tracked a problem with re-installation of some drivers and SW. Uninstall driver as thoroughly as possible, get a program that tracks changes in registry and install driver or SW again. Next time you uninstall driver or SW, you'd know what's left over.

Now I'm starting to think there will be no release today but I don't think they will wait until next week. I have a subscription to Microsoft Office 365 version 1705 (Build 8117.1000 Click-to-Run) which is the latest release for the fast ring of Office Insider. No issues to report there. I can understand people beinging upset that an issue with a Microsoft product due to these recent build is not being addressed. So far 16184 has no major problems but I'd like to do a fresh install (after imaging 16184) of 16188 or whatever is released. My testing focue is for Hyper-V. As per advertising there is an option on startup of new VMs to return to an earlier checkpoint - I haven't need it yet and am working on Fedora Rawhide and ubuntu GNOME 17.10 (code name Artful Advark). Sometimes I convert the vhdx to vmdk disk format and run the machines using VMware WS 12.5.2 under Windows Server 2016. I use Starwind V2V Converter - excellent program. So I wait.

Dunno, Swarfega, but I see that there's been an update showing 16189 in the works. My machine is working on Build 16188.
