DisplayLink is busted, can't use my external monitor now. I get an incompatible display driver popup when I plug it in? I just uninstalled it and just reinstalls the one that doesn't work automatically. In the past all I had to do is plug it in and let it download and install a driver automatically. I guess I'll have to poke around the Diplaylink site or go To ASUS for one that works.

Fixed now, downloaded and installed the ASUS EZLink driver for my monitor and its working again. Fingers crossed. I had to set Windows update to never download driver software.

I saw that before I ever saw the GWX Icon. Well not that screen, mine said Get Windows 10 or something as I hadn't reserved yet. Not it shows what you posted.

What a pain, eh? MS need to re-think their attitude about mandatory WUs for consumers. After all the botched WUs last year, and your display fiascos...

The DisplayLink update issue was on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I could have blocked it from installing, this time. Next clean install though I would have likely got this new driver instead of the one I was using. I could not get DisplayLink to work in Windows 10 no matter what driver I used. ASUS doesn't list a Windows 10 driver for my Monitor and the Windows 10 Beta driver from the DisplayLink site wouldn't work. Cannot save settings error message when I tried to set the correct resolution for my monitor. It won't work at any other resolution than the native resolution. I was thinking this new driver offered today via Windows update might fix that and it would actually work after I do the upgrade to Windows 10 on the 29th. I was not expecting it to break the Windows 8.1 functionality. Oh well, lesson learned.

If Microsoft gets a couple of botched updates, especially ones that force a reinstall etc, and a lot of bad press to go with them, they may have to rethink the forced updates policy. I've been really lucky up until today.

No, I don't. I can take it. I've been testing and submitting pieces of feedback to Microsoft (over 200) since January.

And there's no need to suggest that if an update causes problems, we should not express our disbelief taking into account the closeness to July 29.
The part you don't seem to get is that non-insiders won't get these updates, even on July 29th, until they are completely vetted by us (the millions of insiders).

Moreover, if you really think that something like this will never happen to non-Insider's, well... Then you haven't been paying too much attention over the last months and how Microsoft has released updates and messed up a lot of systems on Windows 8.1 or previous versions.

    So, suit yourself.
That has nothing to do with the Windows as a Service model being introduced with Windows 10. The whole point here is that there are multiple rings that any update has to go through before it gets to non-insiders. Canary, Microsoft Employees, Fast-ring Windows Insiders, slow-ring insiders, and finally after all that is successful it will go to fast ring non-insiders, and only after that will it go to slow-ring non-insiders. By that time it will have been vetted by 10's of millions of configurations.... so anyone concerned about stability will be a non-insider slow-ring. and they can be sure these updates won't be bad.

That's what Windows as a service is, a rethink of all that. The fact that Windows as a Service has to go through multiple rings of users before it gets to the general public will make updates far more reliable to those who care about stability.

Unfortunately, things appear to be quite disheartening in regard to how smooth upgrading and Windows 10 functioning will be after July 29, but...we all hope for the best.

I might be off-topic but allow me, please, to describe a very annoying issue I am facing on my Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium installation, for a couple of days now. I power on my computer and log into my main OS, Windows 7. The desktop appears almost right away, like it used to always do. And then... my Network icon on the taskbar keeps loading, and loading, and loading for around... four to five minutes!! During this time Windows Defender shows my PC at risk -so it has that red X sign- and if I will try to open something, like Windows Explorer or Chrome, some times it runs, other times it does not. I can move the cursor on the screen but it is like the computer is waiting for a program to finish and then continue further.

This is what I have observed in the last few days on my Windows 7 installation. Now... Since I am 101% sure (and absolute) about the quality of my devices (shown in System Spec's), and since I have not installed any new program in this OS from the beginning of its clean installation, which took place approx. two months ago, I can only assume that it is the required for the Upgrade to Win 10, updates that have caused this issue.

Personally, I do not mind. For me, my Home PC is just a toy. I do not mind at all clean-installing an Operating System, as many times as it will be required. I hope the rest of the people who are getting ready to Upgrade to take it equally lightly.
Joanne, I am experiencing the exact same set of problems, and it sounds like several other people are. I do not have the issue with networking, but all of the remainder of what you have said applies to my computer as well. Thanks for taking the time to outline this so precisely.
