Once I upgraded my retail 7/8.1 license to 10. What condition of my retail 7/8.1 will be? Expired? If not I can always reinstall back to my licensed 7/8.1 and transfer it to a new machine then upgrade it to 10 within the 12 months! Right?

Avast used to issue new signatures 5 or more times a day. Updates to Defender are a good sign, other security updates are attempts to plug the sieve all OSes are.

My upgrade from Windows 7 OEM shows as Windows 10 Pro Retail. Doesn't really surprise me though. If you upgraded an OEM install and it stayed OEM, that would normally mean you call the OEM for tech support. Why would they help you if you did a free upgrade to an OS their device never shipped with? Makes more sense for Microsoft to assume responsibly for any issues as a result of the free upgrade, thus your Windows 10 becomes Retail and you call Microsoft for tech support.

The more I hear (read) about it, answer to it looks more like "Heaven only knows and MS is not saying" !!

This has been answered numerous times here -- but I don't have the thread links handy. Basically, Win10 "reuses" the existing Win 7/8/8.1 license for the upgrade. This means that "legally", you are not allowed to continue to use that instance of Win 7/8/8.1 anymore. Whether or not it is technically possible, no one knows at this point.

But, if you then "migrated" that instance of Win 7/8/8.1 to a different machine, you would have two machines running with the same license -- again, not legal.

In theory yes. They may block a free upgrade if they detect the same Retail product code being used more than once. It would be within their rights, IMHO.

What is more disconcerting is the frequency of security updates. Some might see this as a good thang, that MS is on top of the holes. The other side of the coin is that the release is a sieve the same way XP had loose security.

I'm glad that MS is finding the breaches and patching the holes, but today is 26 July. Is this the cadence we should expect with a production release?

I know one of the patches is for Flash, but that was discovered a week or two ago. Not very Agile.
