Windows 10 Build 10240 for PC is now available

    Transfer rights. I heard some observers speculate that the new terms would limit Windows 10 transfer rights. Nope. The new license agreement preserves the longstanding transfer rights: OEM copies are locked to the device on which they're sold, retail copies can be transferred to a different device as long as the old copy is removed first. (The Windows 10 EULA includes a specific exception for PC buyers in Germany, who are allowed to transfer OEM software thanks to a court ruling.)

    Retail always meant Transferable. OEM = Life of device, transferable to other owner with the device it was installed on. MS would be wise not to change that.

    I started a thread a few days ago.

    The answer? No. Or yes.

    I intend to wait patiently for a few weeks, in the hope that it doesn't take months, to clarify all of the licensing and activation requirements.

    I take that to mean if you upgrade from a full retail version of windows 7 sp1 or 8.1 to windows 10. That windows 10 can be transferred to another computer without having to roll back to 7 sp1 or 8.1. The only issue you might need to do is call Microsoft to activate 10 on another computer.

    I had switched from an old spin drive to an SSD and had to contact MS for activation using my 8.1 install disk.

    So, if you get a new machine and have a retail disk it is transferable, but can only be activated on one machine is how I understand it.

    This is different, though. This is a blanket free upgrade, so not sure previous precedent is helpful. Why were they so clearly say 'for the life of the machine' if the license was transferable?

    Again, throughout the campaign for this upgrade, MS has been very careful to say that the free upgrade is good for the life of the device, repeatedly and clearly. I'm sure if you purchase a retail version of Windows 10, it will be transferable. This is a one-off blanket free upgrade, and has its own rules.

    I don't think so. Why has MS been so careful to state that the upgraded Win10 license is good for the life of the device, if it were transferable?

    If I can't transfers windows 10 upgraded from my windows 7 retail and it doesn't retain the transferable right. I might as well just upgrade the windows 7 oem version and keep windows 7 retail in another partition instead of the other way around.



    This seems to say it differently.

    I currently use Windows 8.1 retail version and am very - Microsoft Community

    I have bought Windows 7 pro key (COA Sticker) from amazon for £15. Installed Windows 7 pro as a fresh Install on my PC. Activated Windows 7 fresh install and used build 10166 iso setup to upgrade to Windows 10. Since then I am on Windows 10 latest build 240. Windows is activated now. Showkey shows Windows 10 key as well as key (COA marker) that was purchased from Amazon. For me this was the cheapest option to get Windows 10 pro.
