Neither am I, as it's a bit of a conundrum. In any event, I'll phone MS Australia today and run it by them and get to the bottom of it.

I'm also curious to know why it would not upgrade on Win 8.1, installed with my product code off the original purchase at PLE Computers ... with the message that the OS was not activated, when it showed it was activated on the System window.

Possibly MS have been so inundated with millions of persons world wide wanting to upgrade at the same time, that it's understandable glitches could occur. I also wonder if it has anything to do with pre-designated numbers of upgrades being despatched to any given country/locale. This would tally with the information given to me by the Telstra techo who said they've had numerous complaints of similar failures to complete the upgrade, and in particular at around the 75% point of installation.

Main thing is I've now been able to upgrade over W7 and W8 on 2 PCs, and still have W8.1 licence free.

    Cheers M

Please post back with what Microsoft says about this. Inquiring minds want to know.

    Wilco!

UPDATE: Just got off the phone to MS and the techo said the error code was a new one and he had referred it to his superiors and I would be advised when they found out what it meant.

He also confirmed that the phone number I had used to call the Win Live techo was valid, and under the MS umbrella.

He suggested that the validation data on the motherboard firmware or BIOS may have been corrupted, and when I changed the product code and re-activated it fixed the corruption, allowing me to successfully upgrade to W10.

That could well be the case, because I originally had W8 on that computer, and under the special EULA for hobbyists at the time, W8 could be transferred to another computer, as long as the original owner did the installation, and it was only on one PC.

When W8.1 came out, I couldn't be bothered doing a 3GB plus download to upgrade to 8.1. So I bought a new W8.1 Pro OEM from PLE Computers, uninstalled W8, and did a clean install of W8.1. And my hobbyists EULA was still intact, which would not have been the case if I had upgraded it to W8.1. So both W8, and later W8.1, had been installed on that machine, which is probably why the mix up or corruption of data occurred.

Will update further when MS support get back to me with the meaning of the error code.

The same numbers appeared every time the upgrade failed, with the blue installation circle on approx 75%. It was in a blue window similar to the one when you first start the upgrade, and it also contained the following error message:

"The installation failed in the second boot phase with an error during the boot operation."

And with the error code: 0xC1900101-0x40017

The Win Live Techo I spoke to was named Alfonso. The phone numbers I showed are exactly as you would dial them if in Aussie. Any No in Oz starting with 1800 is a free call.

Did you two see my post earlier? I have a link to the Microzite tech service, which has the exact phone number you called. Look at their site - every tab on the top is the same "index.html" page. This was set up in a hurry, and is not legitimate, in my opinion.

I also pulled the WhoIS info - The domain was purchased in September; only for 1 year.

This is very suspect, and if they did indeed log in to your computer, you need to seriously consider reformatting, and changing your passwords.

EDIT: I am just reading your post above this "confirmed that the phone number I had used to call the Win Live techo was valid, and under the MS umbrella." I don't know what to say now...

Appreciate the info, but I phoned MS Australia, and they confirmed that both numbers were legit.

In addition, Big Pond, who are the biggest ISP in Aussie, confirmed that my data had not been illegally hacked.

And finally, all my passwords, and any vital data on my HD, are encrypted.

Even so, thanks for the heads up, and will be closely monitoring it for the next few weeks. Cheers M :)

Legit or not, still sounds like they were trying to talk you into something you didn't need? I'm not so worried your system is compromised now though.

you might have an adware on your system, some re-direct typically once only on any on-line run at Comcast, Microsoft, or google...the tips in here have so far worked for me http://malwaretips.com/blogs/exstrasavings-removal/

Unlikely. The computer was showing the call screen after the second boot during the upgrade install. Those adware/popup ads would not cause something like this.

This was an error found also when upgrading from W8.0 to W8.1. There was a solution found in eightforums for it.
Solved Windows 8.1 Update Error 0xC1900101-0x40017 on Dell XPS 18

I always uninstall 3rd party anti-virus before doing an upgrade.
