Or you can accept that Microsoft wants to make sure the computer is secure, and tries to make sure Defender doesn't bog down the system.

That's up to you. Media creation tool worked great for me. Running setup.exe from your ISO may be faster though.
When I run setup it asks me to enter product key. I am going from pro to home. Thats how my windows 7 was home edition. If i choose to upgrade pc instead it may bypass key step. If that doesn't work i will have to restore Windows 7 and upgrade using media creation tool.

Once i restore Win 7 it will ask me to update all Windows updates. Can I only choose Sp1 and then run iso to upgrade? Don't want to install every single update.

Will try any suggestions when i am at home. Cheers.

    "Something Happened" !!

The cure for this "wonderfully helpful" error message for me was to change language from English Australian to English US. Then I was able to upgrade my older W8.1 system.
So, wondering if language was why I hadn't had an upgrade on this "Insider" system (build 10240) I tried to change the language. On reboot I had a pair of energized monitors, but no taskbar or background. Was able to run Task Manager, and from there to start Control Panel, and get to System Restore. Now back and running.
Has anyone else had this language related issue?

Edit. While my "Insider" system was running it was extremely slow starting, and opening Settings. Then the Start button wasn't working, so no start menu etc. I had an image from a few days ago, so restored that. Now the system is running as it should, including an operational Start button.

I remember reading somewhere here that someone did this. They selected "Stop Receiving Insider Builds", and computer did several restarts, then everything was as it should be. He did this BEFORE 7/29. But, I could not tell you the thread I read it in...so, I could be mistaken - there's just been too much information over the past few days.

That was me. I completely dropped out of the insider program about 4 days before the release of Windows 10 to the public. I am out of the program and I am just running a regular Windows 10 Home system. I am happy with my decision and I do not think that I will ever rejoin the program. It was fun and exciting, but I was not dual booting as a Windows 10 beta tester, it was my main OS that I used to perform all of my daily activity. I only have one computer and for me, at this time, I am happy being just a regular Windows 10 user.

I have now completed the upgrade, downloaded the iso with media creation tool and upgraded. It was relatively quicker and pleased with the upgrade. I will keep monitoring for a week or two and decide whether to keep it or go back to 8.1

Thanks for reply. Sorry I meant Windows 10 Home version. I just upgrade over Windows 10 pro IP build 10240. Will this become RTM once upgraded using Media creating tool?

Are you going to quit the Windows Insider Program? If so, you should be able to do so go to Windows Update>Advanced Options>Stop Insider Builds.

You may need to reinstall Windows Home Premium and then upgrade to Windows 10 to get things right again.

Yours is the second post I've seen about this "problem".

@Rocky was the person I was thinking of! and he answered! Thanks Rocky!

I think, if you try this, you may just avoid all these other things you are trying to do. (Although, I can't imagine why, if you have Pro, you would prefer to downgrade to Home, but that's your choice.)

So go into settings>updates & security>windows update>advanced options> and select STOP INSIDER BUILDS.

Let the computer do its thing. It may reboot several times, as did Rocky's. By the time it's all done, you will be out of the insider program, and MS will have you on the W10 operating system you should be on. You said you originally upgraded from your W7 OS, so it should work fine.

Let us know how it goes.
