Windows 7 and Windows 10 Pro

Okay tried to run setup from Windows 10 Home iso created using media creation tool, its asking me for Product code. I am upgrading from Windows 10 pro to Windows 10 home because Laptop had Windows 7 pre installed. Now showkey shows oem marker present and it shows the original key. That key I tried type Windows is not accepting this key. I do have a sticker at the back but last 4 digits are worn out. What do I do?

I think this is purely a speculation with no hard evidence.

BTW. I've got a Lenovo T420 with Windows 7 x64 Pro preinstalled. Shortly after build 10130 was released I upgraded the HDD to twice as big as the original and then used Macrium to create two exact copies of the original system in two separate partitions on the new HDD. I set them up for dual-boot. Next I applied build 10130 on top of one of the copies. It activated. Both systems (the original 7 and the upgraded 10) worked flawlessly with no activation issues (other than Office 2010 requiring re-activation upon first use from the new HDD)

Yesterday I reimaged the W10 partition with a clone of the W7 partition and, after checking that it works, applied the W10 upgrade from the official ISO (didn't fancy waiting for the GWX to do its job).

Both systems are activated and can be run alternatively. I'll see what happens a month from now, but I expect that only windows.old will be purged.

Clean install is not going to work like that. Normally you need to have W7 installed and registered to upgrade to W10. Since it is OEM it shouldn't be a licensing problem, key will be picked up from MB. For now you can skip inserting key and let it install. Later on when you sign in with MS account it should be recognized and licensed. May take some time to go thru though . Activation servers are in knots right now.

First off, you can't upgrade from Pro to Home, its a downgrade. Normally the only way to do that is a reinstall. If you want to be totally legal on the consumer version, restore Windows 7. Then run the Media Creation Tool and select the "Upgrade this PC now" option. It will then upgrade you to the correct version depending on what version your upgrading from. You should then have 10 Home. No product key is asked for. I upgraded 4 PC this way. It downloads the required files, verifies them, checks your system, etc, etc. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10 Doing it that way you don't have to create any install media at all, or boot from a DVD or thumb drive.

There is no key in the BIOS for OEM Windows 7 PC's. There is an OEM marker but it doesn't contain a key. Windows 7 has to be installed for the key to be detected, its only stored in the registry.

Thanks for clarifying. This is going to be painfull way of upgrading to Windows 10 home from 7 home. Packardbell DVD restore takes ages and you have to download million files through Windows update and finally download SP1. Oh This is going to be some trip. I was hoping for some easier way. I will check on External drive if I have Windows 7 pro image before I upgraded to Windows 10 IP.

There is this? http://www.unawave.de/installation/d...n.html?lang=EN I have no idea if it will work in Windows 10. You would need somebody to tell you what the reg entries are for 10 Home. All my installs are Pro. Still might ask for a key, not sure? Use at your own risk.

Last night, I downloaded the ISOs I needed from the tool you guys mentionned and, ealier today, I discovered that my SSD was down about ~7GB from the last time I checked without downloading anything very voluminous from the last time I checked. So, it must have been Microsoft's tool. Do you guys know about temporary files downloaded to my C:\ that weren't deleted afterward?
