Have a look at this, http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...review-builds/

If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.
2 of my machine was win 7, but I clean installed to insider preview build. When official release is ready and I want to upgrade to the official release, what should I do please?

Gotta reinstall 7, then upgrade via Windows Update or ISO. After you do that, you can clean install.

When you reinstall 7, make sure you update to the point that you can see the GWX Windows 10 Upgrade icon.

    Sucks, I know.

It shouldn't ask for a key? And It should activate automatically? If your updating from a previous build.
Is that your experience, as mine is different
I've always had to enter the latest code to activate
which helpfully brink did a stickie here:

    I went from Windows 7 to 10074 > 10122 > 10130 > 10158 > 10159 > 10163 > 10166 >10240. Never had to enter a key and always activated automatically. I got new keys several times automatically.

That's strange that your not getting the build. I know from previous post that your computer was ready for the next release. I wouldn't think a VM would have anything to do with it. So far on my computer it running very smooth. I had one security update after the install that needed a reboot and after that all is good. I still have the pro version which surprised me. I thought for sure it would see my original OS was the core version and switch me back.
