Unfortunately, things appear to be quite disheartening in regard to how smooth upgrading and Windows 10 functioning will be after July 29, but...we all hope for the best.
I might be off-topic but allow me, please, to describe a very annoying issue I am facing on my Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium installation, for a couple of days now. I power on my computer and log into my main OS, Windows 7. The desktop appears almost right away, like it used to always do. And then... my Network icon on the taskbar keeps loading, and loading, and loading for around... four to five minutes!! During this time Windows Defender shows my PC at risk -so it has that red X sign- and if I will try to open something, like Windows Explorer or Chrome, some times it runs, other times it does not. I can move the cursor on the screen but it is like the computer is waiting for a program to finish and then continue further.
This is what I have observed in the last few days on my Windows 7 installation. Now... Since I am 101% sure (and absolute) about the quality of my devices (shown in System Spec's), and since I have not installed any new program in this OS from the beginning of its clean installation, which took place approx. two months ago, I can only assume that it is the required for the Upgrade to Win 10, updates that have caused this issue.
Personally, I do not mind. For me, my Home PC is just a toy. I do not mind at all clean-installing an Operating System, as many times as it will be required. I hope the rest of the people who are getting ready to Upgrade to take it equally lightly.
Joanne, open Performance in Task manager and see if anything is downloading or uploading at that time.
The members here that specialize in AV, especially one that oversees it for a large auto manufacturer in Detroit, MI, state that Defender is sufficient for home computers. Somehow it runs at kernel level. Some run Malwarebytes anti-malware scans along with it. Business networks are a different story. Personnally I've used Defender since inception. Retired now, but ran a few business machines for years. Never had a problem.
Actually many say we are our own best AV via good computing and surfing habits, which is true. Don't open suspicious email attachments or scams, download crapware or anything from suspicious sites, etc. All in all, it's up to you to decide. Whatever you feel safe with.

Malwarebytes free or pay/full: Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software
Edit:
I see in your specs your system has 4 GBs of memory. More than sufficient. Your i3 I'm not familiar with, but I'd guess your system would run quicker without the AVG. If you do uninstall it I would look for the current uninstaller to use. Some leave crap behind, especially in the Registry.
Thanks for your suggestion but...nah...it's OK, I do not mind :)
And honestly, I do not even know IF I can do something about this, besides living with it for a few days (or weeks). Right after my desktop appears, my Network connection, so the icon in the task bar, keeps loading and loading and loading... Then, after around 4-5 minutes (!) the rest of the icons appear: the "Get Windows 10", the "GeForce Experience" icon, and the rest. So I don't know IF anything is downloading, I don't know IF the Task Manager will open or not... Some times I can open something, other times I have to wait for it to finish whatever it is doing, and then proceed.
All this in my main OS, Win 7 64 bit Home Premium, clean-installed two months ago, with my (few) regular programs I always use, with absolutely no new program installed during the last month, and when it comes to updates? Whatever Microsoft provides (besides Silverlight). Recently I get only Defender updates, anyway.
What I will do is that I will wait for the Upgrade to 10, and then get the official ISO from MS and clean install 10 on this system. On my other, secondary, SSD I will keep the Technical Preview and continue as an Insider (dual boot). I will clean-install the preview, as well, though, as soon as MS will provide an official (Insider's?) ISO.
Thank you.
I'm stuck with that on an 8.1 system that just did updates.
It always takes much longer to boot into 8.1, but this is ridiculous! BTW, mine is an AMD system.
Edit: Well, she finally booted and when I put in my password, same old same old with black screen for more than awhile, finally getting there. Thirty One Important Updates attempted and failed! Sheesh!
Thanks for the advice, will give defender a try, i failed to mention as a long time (12 years) mac user returning to Windows recently after a brief spell with Chrome OS, the last windows system I used was XP, things appear to have evolved quite a bit since then.
I had some weirdness with Windows update on my laptop yesterday. Windows 8.1 Pro, AMD APU. I clicked show all available updates, check marked them, and got an immediate failed screen. Went back and it showed all up to date last checked today at..... Closed it all out went back in and it showed updates ready to install, clicked install and they did. Something like that, I'm just going by memory now, which isn't always that good. My Windows 10 desktop is really slow to boot up now. Tiles take forever to load. I'm just going to hold out till the upgrade on the 29th, then do a clean install.
