Windows 10: Preparing to Upgrade One Billion Devices ...
Preparing for Windows 10 Upgrades ...
Soon, we will give a build of Windows 10 to our OEM partners so they can start imaging new devices with Windows 10. The new devices our partners are working on are very exciting, I can’t wait to hear your feedback as you get a chance to use them.

Soon after, we will distribute a build of Windows 10 to retailers all over the world, so they can assist their customers with upgrades of newly purchased devices that were originally imaged with Windows 8.1. Look for this sticker for assurance that our OEM partners have proactively tested a device for compatibility with Windows 10.
Pick nits if you must, today is 26 July, launch date is 29 July. OEMs, retailers, and eco-system partners (what ever they are) have the build. So do we, but for us bits must be flipped.

Maybe that's how the millions of Insiders will be updrated - from their own Preview installs with bit flipping when applied to a qualifying OS.
    That would be BRILLIANT!

After this Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3074678) on my system OneDrive is partially broken

Now every time I start up OneDrive it takes me to the initial setup procedure. Yes I can still get to my OneDrive storage but it's a PITA to do so.

    Any ideas anyone?

That's my theory also. One small update/patch to kick it into the final opt out for the official consumer release, or stay as an insider.

And that's how it should be.
Agreed - maybe OEM license agreements will mutate and eventually disappear.

OneDrive fired up fine on this machine.

You'll probably get better help if you open a new thread in Software and Apps - Windows 10 Forums

I almost missed your post scanning this thread.

    One good question to ask:
Once I upgraded my retail 7/8.1 license to 10. What condition of my retail 7/8.1 will be? Expired? If not I can always reinstall back to my licensed 7/8.1 and transfer it to a new machine then upgrade it to 10 within the 12 months! Right?
I think that's one you'd have to ask MS - they do have forums with official folks participating. Frankly, I've become less than totally confident in my understanding of the whole situation.

In my subjective, personal opinion, Microsoft has always had a quite clear licensing policy and I have seen nothing¹ on the Internet which makes me believe they have now suddenly changed that.

    • An OEM or System Builder Windows 7 or 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10
      • The original OEM license will remain reserved as a prerequisite for Windows 10 license, it can't be reused even on another partition on the same PC it belongs to in a dual boot scenario
      • The Windows 10 license will also be an OEM license and cannot be transferred to another hardware setup, at least not without the phone activation option
      • User has the opportunity to roll back to the original OEM version of the original Windows 7 or 8.1 in which case the original OEM license will again be activated and valid and the Windows 10 license can be reused, either on the same or on another machine

    • A Retail Windows 7 or 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10
      • The original Retail license will remain reserved as a prerequisite for Windows 10 license, it can't be reused even on another partition on the same PC it belongs to in a dual boot scenario
      • The Windows 10 license will be a Retail license and can be transferred to another hardware without issues
      • If the Windows 10 license is used on another hardware, either by upgrading another Windows 7 or 8.1 license or for a clean install, the original Windows 10 license on the first machine will no longer be valid. The user can in this case roll back to the original Windows 7 or 8.1 Retail license on the first machine

    • A clean install of Windows replacing an OEM version of Windows 7 or 8.1
      • If done using using an OEM or a System Builder license of Windows 10, Windows cannot be transferred to another hardware setup
      • If done with a full Windows 10 license, it can be transferred to another hardware setup
      • The replaced older version of Windows, although not needed as a prerequisite for the Windows 10 cannot be transferred to another hardware due its OEM status. However, it can be used on the same machine in a dual boot scenario

    • A clean install of Windows replacing a Retail version of Windows 7 or 8.1
      • If done using using an OEM or a System Builder license of Windows 10, Windows cannot be transferred to another hardware setup
      • If done with a Retail Windows 10 license, it can be transferred to another hardware setup
      • The replaced older version of Windows can freely be transferred to any hardware, either another hardware setup or to be used on the same machine with Windows 10 in a dual boot scenario

I've said this before, I'm saying it again: Calm down

    Kari

¹ With "nothing" I mean nothing official from the Microsoft. Of course I see these tinfoil hat stories stating something else daily all around the Interwebs, sadly even here.

I can't think of any other example of licensing like that in "real life".
