I had switched from an old spin drive to an SSD and had to contact MS for activation using my 8.1 install disk.

So, if you get a new machine and have a retail disk it is transferable, but can only be activated on one machine is how I understand it.
It was always, one license, one machine except for special group licenses.
If you install anew on another disk than yes you'd have to confirm with MS about license but if you cloned system disk, no.

This is different, though. This is a blanket free upgrade, so not sure previous precedent is helpful. Why were they so clearly say 'for the life of the machine' if the license was transferable?
I think, they are so careful to say "life of the device" because they are looking at life cycle of all devices (phones, tablets, etc.). Their intention of Windows 10 SaaS - Software as a Service - where, after a certain point in time, they will charge, kind of like the O365 subscriptions. Just my thought, nothing concrete to base that on.

MS will have to come clean with conditions attached to various options soon, otherwise there will be backlash and outcry. It would have to be spelled clean as soon as they start selling windows.

Another mystery update, it's not labeled Security and can't find what it's about. Went thru without a hitch. Did anybody notice how fast defender updates are coming, maybe even 5 times a day ?

When right clicking network icon to change adapter settings not working anymore. The window opens but when trying to disable/enable adapters the screen just flashes and nothing happens. Have to go device manager to effect changes. Anybody else experiencing this? This happened after yesterdays updates.

This was the first build supposedly sent to the manufactures to put on their computers. So, the industry calls it an RTM release. Microsoft doesn't want it called that, the reason I think that it is possible that Microsoft is going to have more than one build that manufactures can put on their computers.
. . .where is it posted that this build was sent to manufactures. . .please.

It's practically axiomatic, manufacturers have to get it well in advance of the date OS has to start selling on, it takes time to provide OS on their devices.
