Thanks for the input Kari and Ed! I would not have thought to check there, Ed...but here's the strange thing...on my desktop the option is grayed out...! Inaccessible. But as Kari mentioned, I have also never had to pay any attention to this option to see a cached list of Run commands previously executed. Very strange. A quick experimentation with nearby options does not release Show most used Apps and it is still grayed out.

Thanks, you guys--maybe we can get to the bottom of this...! I still think there is a high probability that the install bug I've experienced is responsible for this...but maybe not...

When Show most used Apps is grayed out, you will usually need to turn on Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results like in the blue note box under step 2 of Option Two below.

I'm not quite sure why Cereberus decided to take offense with my completely flippant comment, especially without even bothering to verify if I was being serious or not. But, it is what it is.

Micro$oft may have price gouged folks before, and may do so now, but I'm happily paying for an Office 365 subscription, and while I am continually trying to upgrade my TechNet Windows 7 keys, when push comes to shove and I am no longer able to upgrade to WinX (most likely on one of my future machines) I'll gladly buy it as well. And most likely future products as well, though I am not averse to using FOSS software.

Just to clarify, the O365 Home subscription includes 5 single install licenses which can be used by 5 different users, all getting in addition to full suite of Office desktop apps 1 TB of OneDrive and 60 free Skype Call minutes a month to landlines all over the world and mobile numbers in selected countries.

O365 Pro Plus however is a single user subscription, giving for a single user 5 installs on PC, another 5 on tablets and phones, Skype for Business plus 1 TB of OneDrive for Business. All installs need to be activated with the same email address thus making it practical only for a single user. Also, whereas O365 Home includes 1 TB OneDrive for each license (total 5 TB), O365 Pro Plus only comes with 1 TB of OD for Business.

Short: If you want to share your 5 installs with family or friends and give each 1 TB OneDrive, select O365 Home. If you need Office by yourself on multiple machines and are happy with just 1 TB OD for Business, select O365 Pro Plus.

To Kari and Ed...thanks so much...Ed, all that needs to be On is the privacy setting. Show most used apps, as Kari mentioned, is optional--but thanks so much for the suggestions from you both!

Glad to find this is merely a settings problem--not a bug relative to the black screen I get at the end of each install lately. Actually want to add that Microsoft is fairly serious about privacy in allowing the user to turn off this kind of function...! The company just needs to be a bit more robust in explaining what they do occasionally...No complaints here.

Somehow or other, I just can't see how Office could possibly qualify as price gouging. When I finally buy a new computer, I'll pay the extra bucks for Pro because I like it. And if I choose to build my next system, I'll just buy Windows 10 if I can't upgrade my last Windows 8.1 Pro to it.

In addition to this info, there is the fact that that even before that, I was shelling out several hundred dollars when the new Office Professional version would come out - my need to Access was always there.

I initially wanted to subscribe to the Pro Plus version, but realized that I did not have a need for multiple devices myself as much as my family had a need for their devices also. So, instead, I opted for the O365 Home plan, which allows my sister in Hawai'i to use Office while completing her dissertation - one less headache for her, as she was forced to abandon the Office 2010 license I had given her form my TechNet account because it was causing her too many problems, particularly with Outlook.

I may go back later and see if I can have multiple subscriptions, and if so, get a second O365 Pro sub for myself so I can have the multiple devices when I need to again.

Currently I have only been making use of Word and Excel, but I am moving back to a point where I will need a lot more products for my own use as I expand my services, and a Pro sub purchased through the business account would satisfy the multiple device need while being on a separate email address and thus being a completely separate sub from the personal one for home use.

I have cleaned them up a day after this build was installed and now they showed up again.

Those 2 folders are Windows update working folders. Windows use them a lot. You won't get rid of them. ESD downloads go to one of them.

Must be some new thing, before Disk Cleanup deleted them. It did so this time too but they are back now without any large updates/builds.
