I just upgraded three separate machine by way of the Windows Assistant tool and so far only have seen the usual need to reinstall the sound card's software only. Have no need to perform a clean while making a system image for each machine running good is advised.

For 1511, 1607 and now 1703 I've always used the MCT to make the install media and upgraded manually. The download of the .iso (or USB) is over 4GB for 64-bit, a bit less for 32-bit. Through Windows Update you would be downloading a similar setup package, so the download size would be about the same.
Personal preference, really. Some like to make a clean break at each new version. Others (like me) prefer a progressive upgrade from one version to the next. Downloading the .iso give you the option to do a clean install should an upgrade have issues - not that I've ever had any.
Is the Creators Update about the biggest change to Win 10 yet?

Has the manual install of the Creators Update gone mostly smooth for everyone? Why has Microsoft warned about manually installing it early?

Hopefully I can get a system image in before Windows Update starts installing at will...

No. Well, it is if you have 3-D capable hardware and a HoloLens. If you don't it looks hardly any different from the Anniversary Update, some more settings have moved from Control Panel into Settings and Defender looks different - that's about all you'd notice.

Seems that way... Poll - Easiest upgrade ever

Why has Microsoft warned about manually installing it early?
Because certain hardware is known to have issues.

@Kol12, if you have hardware with the known issues then Microsoft has blocked windows update from sending it to you.

Blocking availability of the update to devices we know will experience issues is a key aspect of our controlled rollout approach. We decide what to block based on user impact, and blocking issues are a high priority for us to address as quickly as possible. During the time it takes to address an issue, we want to limit the number of customers exposed to that issue.

    @Bree

Are the hardware issues documented anywhere as to be able to make an informed decision about manually updating?

Read that post that Bree linked you to - here is the link again.

Windows 10 Creators Update rollout: First phase update - - Windows 10 Forums

One of the issues that has been reported has been with Bluetooth devices, specifically those using certain Broadcom chips, and then they posted about the issue and the possible fix at the Micro$oft Community forums.

For example, our feedback process identified a Bluetooth accessory connectivity issue with PCs that use a specific series of Broadcom radios, ultimately resulting in devices not reconnecting as expected. Once identified, we posted this issue to our Windows community forum, provided user guidance on troubleshooting, and blocked additional devices with these specific Bluetooth radios from updating. Once a solution is available, we will update our forum post and remove the block.

It’s important to note that when customers use the Software Download Site to manually install the Creators Update they bypass many of these blocks. Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless you’re an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you. When your device becomes eligible for the Creators Update rollout, you’ll be prompted to make some important choices on your privacy settings before the Creators Update can install.

The Media Creation Tool creates the whole new version of Windows as an ISO is that correct? Can that be used to do the upgrade or just for clean installing the new version? Is the update assistant the better way to upgrade?

I had downloaded the latest version of Windows ISO, i.e. Creators Update, via MCT and saved it onto a USB drive, via which I performed clean installation.

Can you use the ISO to do the update or is the update assistant better for that?

There is no significant difference between using the Upgrade Assistant or downloading the MCT and using its first option 'upgrade this PC now'. Neither option will leave you with a copy of the install media when you are done.

Most of us prefer to use the MCT's second option 'make install media for another PC' which downloads to a USB or .iso file, then from within windows run the Setup from that to do the upgrade (you can mount the .iso by double-clicking on it). That way we have the media to try again if there's a problem, upgrade other machines, or do a clean install if preferred.

Whichever way you choose the results of the upgrade will be the same, will take about the same time to finish, and download about the same amount of data.
