I had that happen a lot in one particular VM I had back a month or two ago after I forced quite (well, forced reboot actually) of the VM while it was downloading the then current IP build.

I never did get that fixed, other than letting that build get skipped and checking for a new build after a second build was pushed out - and what do you know, that VM went and downloaded and installed the first build instead of skipping it and installing the current build lol.

If there is one thing that M$ really, really needs, it is a downloadable utility that automatically cleans up the WU repository correctly and successfully every time. I spent a combined time of over 36 hours trying to fix that, employing countless suggestions (well over 30 different things, some of which had similar elements or re-iterated steps between items, but nothing worked for me on that VM.

When someone from MS posts a work around it should work or the build should be pulled.

I did the registry key and it didn't even re download; instead, it said preparing to install and got to around 80% and I got the error again.

Went back to copy the error message to post here and it said updates are ready; Install Now. I clicked on it and it's once more "preparing to install"!

    This is getting monotonous!

Edit: Got the same error message again! It just will not redownload! "Windows 10 Insider Preview 16170 (rs_prerelease) - Error 0x80070241".
No, wynona, the 'fix' didn't work for me either. I gave up til they get their act together and download something that is suitable. Too many of us can't get this to download.

Yeah, Jeff, and both of us generally get the new Build quickly and hardly ever have a problem with it! Sheesh!

First try failed at 32% working on updates. This has happened before, and a 2nd attempt has succeeded. So I tried again, and now am on version 1703 (OS build 16170.1000). I have a video card driving primary and secondary monitors, and a 3rd monitor driven by the on-board graphics. After the 1st reboot at 30% working on updates, it increments to 32% then switches the display to the 3rd monitor. After the 75% reboot, the display reverts back to my primary monitor. Don't know if that has any bearing on the failures at 32%, but wonder. First time that switch to the 3rd monitor happened (way back) I didn't have that monitor powered, and concluded that the update had failed!
System Protection was turned off again, but it seems to have kept my default programs, at least the ones I have used since the update.

Imod, I have dual monitors, and while it's doing its installation thing, it keeps flipping back and forth between them. I don't think the monitor thing has anything to do with its failure to install . . . too many of us have that problem now.
