Anyone have a wild guess as to why my laptop refuse to update to any major Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade?

When the TH upgrade came out laptop failed. Had to do a clean install. When the Anniversary upgrade came out, same issue, same fix… clean install. Now the Creators upgrade… same issue… install failed! Which means another clean install just to get the Creators upgrade.

Never issues on the desktop, just laptop - Asus Zenbook Prime (UX31A-DH71) specs: Intel Core i7 3517U (Ivy), 4GB DDR3 RAM, Intel HD4000 GPU, 238Gig SSD drive, Realtek HD Audio. Windows 10 Pro x64 version 1607 (Build 14393.969). Non insider.

Anyway, as usual, it seems I can’t upgrade to latest major build without doing a clean install
Have you manually updated/installed any drivers? For example downloaded from Asus support page and forced them in to the system? This could be one reason you can not upgrade from build to build. Ever since I became a Windows Insider, I have not touched any of the vendor delivered drivers, but rather let Microsoft take care of the driver updates. No issues on any of my ASUS laptops.

You should really take a look at the upgrade .log-files as suggested many times before in previous posts/replies to your upgrade issue, and post them here so we can help better. Also check the event log for any errors.

A simple, it does not work or the other computer works fine, is not enough, not much to go from with that information.

Interesting little but useful small change in disk management.

I notice the text is now super sharp in Disk Management whereas before it was slightly soft and furry. Not seeing anything else different there in my set up.

At least you looked at it the post. Thanks.

Anyway I stated earlier that I installed Creator on my backup system without issue. That even Office 2010 with Outlook was working for me without issue. I also don't foresee my Office 365 having issues when I update my main rig. That said, I wish I had a solution for your issue, but all I can say is my 2010 Office Professional works with Creator.
The only suggestion I have, regarding updating a system that will not upgrade is, after performing a backup image, to take the drive out from the laptop, hook it up to the desktop, and make a bcdboot entry on the desktop with Bcdboot L:\windows where L: is the drive letter of your laptop windows drive, and reboot into the Laptop drive.

Once it has booted onto the laptop drive and gone thru the starting services... Getting devices ready... Getting ready... routine, and then boots to the desktop, perform the upgrade.

After upgrading, return the drive to the laptop, and if all is well, your system should be upgraded as if it were done on the laptop. It will be able to do future upgrades this way again.

The only issues I have had with this were:

I once had to change a registry setting that Identified my system as a portable operating system (AKA Windows to Go) and so indicated it could not upgrade a USB drive - easily fixed (Windows 10 Update from 8.1 - Thinks I'm trying to install on USB Flash - Solved - Windows 10 Forums)

So just to give you some feedback about this update.

Clean installed on our 3 computers (using the Media Creation Tool to make a bootable USB) without problems, everything runs properly and i didn't encounter any major bugs or issues. It is definitely lighter than AU.

As usual, updating seems to cause more problems. My mom upgraded her 2 computers, one update went fine, but the other crashed and she had to revert back to the previous Windows state. She didn't lost any data though and the upgrade will probably work when she'll give it a try later.

So far, I've encounter these bugs:
    - the desktop icons can be a little capricious when you try and rearrange them.
    - when you click on the Defender notification icon, nothing happens. You need to right click on it and select open. Don't know if it's a bug or poor design though.

I'm also very surprised to noticed that the screensavers seems to be gone. Tried to look everywhere on settings and control panel but they are nowhere to be found.

Thank you guys for your help, i hope you'll enjoy this version of Windows as it seems pretty good

    Hi there
    One more thing I noticed

Login screen reverted back to the original Windows one and I can't change it back to the ones that give you the new pictures when you login

I've got back to the old boring screen again from several releases ago-- all the settings are OK but don't do anything

My update is DEFINITELY Windows creator update though

What happened is that it takes time to populate everything after an install/upgrade. After everything was populated and synced, you got the desired results. Another thing that does not start working straight away is all live-tiles in START. after a while they start to work, update and animate too.

    Patience is our friend!

    Cheers!

    Hi Guys

Upgraded via the Update assistant with no issues except a slow download. Does anyone with location services active have the location icon permanently on in the taskbar. It pops up about ten minutes after a reboot and never goes off. I cant track down whats using it. Any ideas anyone.
