Unlike a good deal of you I never used Windows (any thing) until 2008 when I started playing around with the Windows 7 Alpha build. I used Mac OSes since 1987, albeit it was fun using Win 7 in Boot Camp, and to this day still use Win 7 in Boot Camp. . .:)

I was kinda the same way, Lee. My parents used Macs, so I used Macs up till 2013 when I bought my HP Envy x2 and shifted to Windows 8.

Fell in love with it instantly! Never going back to Mac

They just killed MSE AV support for it today. XP is dead people, it's rotting and the maggots are eating it's kernel,, throw it in a hole and burn it, will ya?
I have games that won't run on anything newer than XP.
They still run perfectly in an XP VM.

Why bother trying to run Windows software in a Linux distro using Wine, when you can just install a VM manager (like VMware Player) and then install your preferred version of Windows?

And when did Windows XP launch? And do you recall the intended support cutoff date?

Microsoft is aiming for Windows 10 be be the next "final" OS, like what XP was intended (before the internet changed everything). It will be supported long after people should've moved on.

Even on a VM with VM Player 98SE won't run on a machine with 16gb of ram! Plus each release of the player only covers so many editions based when the particular player version comes out. So not every Windows can run.

Now one thing I found out with the 32bit while we were are all still running the beta and RCs builds for 7 was that stuff like pc games that simply would not run on Vista even with compatibilty mode and elevated permissions easily would install and run on 7! The vast difference between the two besides 7 being more responsive with a faster install time as well as boot to desktop speed was the return of a degree of Legacy support as far as Fat was concerned. The backward compatibility saw more attention as well. "Things go better with... "7"! Yes! "

I've never tried running W98SE as a VM.
Can you even get the original patches for it?

I've seen people on this forum state that they run W98 VMs though.

That is the main reason that I keep a library of installers.

I was able to get a lot of games to run on W7, but SP1 killed them!
So I created an XP VM and since then they've all worked without any issues.

I had one game that could only be run on a "real" XP install.
It's now gone to the "graveyard of extinct software".

I had Metal of Honor: Allied Assault but didn't go with any of the other editions for that particular game. When bought I was running the old XP/Vista dual boot on one of the old cases prior to seeing the 7 beta builds on a then recently newer case. I had to put XP back just to run that one until early 7 but unfortunately only on the 32bit 7 saw it run.

I kept a few of the releases for VM Player while going for a newer version not the latest however. I still have the preview and a distro on it at the moment while the preview ended now being the first release stuffing up on me while providing the look I needed. In the attempts to Win 31., 95, or 98SE to run on VM I had to give up mainly too new a player if not the lack of a physical floppy drive not floppy type bootable image necessary to get the old installers to run. The first of six original 3.1 floppies? DOA! It can still be read but would not run the set up. 95 and 98SE of course were both on dvds but still needed the floppy element as well as the old Legacy form of hardware detection being a concern as well.

So you can see it would be a project to actually get them running while we have different machines to work with. Back in 2004 I had to drop 98SE entirely from the dual boot with XP when the next build to come saw no Legacy drivers. That was shortly after replaced by Vista before XP was gone soon afterwards. But 7 stood out in comparison when finding it far more user friendly and nothing I am in rush to see go.

The one thing besides the Start menu gone and Metro theme that turned me off from 8 and soon after we saw 8.1 arrive was MS dumping WMP! They included in Vista and 7 but suddenly take it back with excuses that too many players are out there? 8, 8.1 Pro editions on the other hand saw it included but no dvd or video playback codecs. Fortunately for one free media player found in the meantime as that covers what WMP 10-11-12 and 13 won't support. For video captures and digital cam clips WMP was set as the default player in 7.

Hopefully that will still run on 10 while I don't think the tuner card will while that will go sometime anyways. I can imagine however that while the original dual boot testing with the new secure boot resulted in drive errors before it serves to isolate things like the boot sector from root kits and other malwares. And I still have an OS drive waiting for something new to go on it!

    Hi there

Agree with you 100% -- these days the overhead of running a VM is tiny -- and the VM software is FREE too. In the past things like WINE were fine when either VM software wouldn't run on Linux decently or the overhead of a full guest OS was too much on old hardware.

I've run up to 9 concurrent VM's on a Surface pro 3 with decent response on all of them -- and the HOST OS I was using was Linux running from an EXTERNAL SSD.

Still run an XP VM for quite a lot of things --works just fine --I don't need it for accessing the Internet etc so things like security or the fact it can't run the latest browser are irrelevant. The VM just does the job it has to --for Internet etc I use the HOST.

    Cheers

Having more than one OS at your disposal, without rebooting all the times, is certainly great benefit for the end users. One extra benefit is that most if not all malware, including 0-day exploits, do not install in virtual machine. While the malware can get on the VM systems, its installation routine checks for VM and exits if and when detected. There are PUPs, digital sneak oils, basically not malware just questionable usefulness had started detecting VM as well and exit, if and when found.

The intent of this routine is prevent security researchers to evaluate the malware installation process, payload and determine the command center's hostname/IP address.

So, for all practical purposes, running an OS in VM is probably more secure than running the OS natively with maximum security and all of the third-party security solution in place. Not quite yet, but it's getting there...

As Jimbo said, VM software is free and you should try it. While running the VM on a Linux host, that generally uses less resources, you can run Windows on Windows as well. Nowadays, with quad-core, or more CPUs and abundance of memory, there isn't much performance hit for average end user. You can also take the VM with you on a USB stick and run it on other VM hosts.
