I've always taken the free upgrade "life of the device" to mean how long a user keeps the same system, that is motherboard etc. if you are a self-builder, or a system if you buy complete systems. I think if MS is using an approximate 2-4 years as "life of device" for accounting purposes that would be about correct for most situations. I have an Intel Core i7 920 system that is nearing six years of age (but still does what I need at the moment) and I will likely rebuild within two years, if not next year. When I do rebuild the Win 10 free upgrade license will end and I'll buy Win 10 Pro to install on the new SSD. I was still able to use Win 10 free for a year or more. I don't see a problem here as the author of the article clearly does.
