I am seeing this on my system, can't get rid of it, I ended up manually downloading the latest Defender Definitions and applying them, but when that definition got superseded, it happened for the next revision, annoying...
Tried resetting Windows Update, Clearing Defender back to defaults and applying again to no avail...
I had the same error, the "Windows update troubleshooter" fixed it, but when there is a new update to Defender, the same error reappears and again I have to use that tool, the first time doesn't work but running it several times fixes the problem until a new update to Defender appears.
It looks like the update took. It shows correct version in defender definitions, but for some reason windows update wasn't showing it installed. But this is what I had to do to fix it....I hope...
From Command Prompt (admin)
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
I had to manually stop windows update service from here
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
rename to SoftwareDistribution.old
C:\Windows\System32\Catroot
rename to Catroot.old
You will lose admin privileges at this point.
open windows defender and update definitions through defender...wait for it to finish.
Reboot
Run Windows Update
Change Catroot.old back to Catroot (you'll get admin privileges back)
You can delete SoftwareDistribution.old, there should be a new one there.
All should be well from here.
May I suggest a system back first though to be safe .
WD update still Error code: (0x80246007) fixer didn't fix it, Sfc /scannow still can't fix everything found in error. None of it seems to make any problems though.
