It took me until my late 40s before I was comfortable sleeping in the dark. Even then there are a few LEDs, like power brick and residual PC lights still on.

Do you check under the bed and in the closet too ? I do, my cats like to hide there and wake me in the middle of night to let them out.

Personally I always press WIN + L (Lock) when I leave the computer and I have forced pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL before I can even enter password. The display turns off after 10 minutes.

Are your cats normal? The one we have is a totally insane femail. No like anything especially grand children - or any children to be precise. Grumpy old woman cat that I'd not live without.
