Cumulative Update KB4015438 for Windows 10 v1607 Build 14393.969

Yeah this update seems to do nothing other than slow down the system. In my case the update was pretty quick compared to installing windows from scratch. I had some other cumulative update get pushed to me the other day, then (KB4015438) popped up yesterday. I let windows update run and do it's thing but I had to leave and was gone until later in the evening. When I got back the PC wanted me to restart so I did and when it was finished I shut the PC down and went to bed.

This morning I got up and turned the system back on to use it and found after about 5 minutes of using the operating system that one of my drives was no longer showing up and the sounds coming out of the computer at times had that "I'm about to bluescreen" sound but never did. I can't describe the noise, the best way to describe the noise is to compare it to a stutter. I immediately went to computer management to see if my D: drive was listed and it wasn't. While doing that the system fan was running in high speed like the PC was extremely busy in the background with something, yet hardly nothing was running. Things like opening the start menu became diminished and sluggish. File explorer was hanging up randomly and since I had lost access to my D drive my libraries weren't available.

I removed the update and restarted, powered off and checked my cables for my HDD's and rebooted, waited and after Windows loaded back up the system seemed normal, even the D: drive appeared normally. I can't tell for sure if the random issues was due to the update or simply a loose cable. I just recently bought a different PC case and transplanted my hardware into the new case but that was last week and the PC has worked fine up until yesterday.

Right now that damn update has already reinstalled itself, I just haven't hit the restart now e-button. I don't really want to install this update but Microsoft is hell bent on making sure I do. If the update causes that again MS will find one less PC they will have to update in the future as the Windows Update service will be disabled. Regardless of the "security threats" MS is adamantly telling everyone will occur if the system is not kept up to date. Perhaps it's true but what use is my computer hardware if I can't use it anyway due to M$'s incompetence? Short answer, none.

This time around after the update there were no problems to speak of. System seems to be working normally again. Perhaps it was just a loose sata connector. Though I have not powered off and back on since the update was installed for the second time.

Last weeks update broke Films & TV, Windows Media Player and Microsoft DVD Player...

I had that issue with KB4013429 (and not just 3rd-party apps as MS claim - Films & TV and Media Player crashed for certain types of videos that required the MPEG-2 codec, notably .TS files).
...I'm pleased to say I've tested them and they all work with 969.

Another update that went with no issues on my ancient Dell P4 desktop and took about an hour. And on the Surface Pro 4 once again got stuck at 95% download for at least 2 hrs before I chose to restart. I'm sure it's gonna go through eventually with a couple more attempts, like it did the last times. Both computers come from 14393.953, run W10 Pro 64 bit, and are connected wirelessly to the same internet.

Looking at this and everyone's other experience here it's just interesting to see how little robustness there is in the W10 update process. Still some way to go for Microsoft here before W10 can be taken as seriously as W7 it seems.

My biggest issue with Windows Updates is that, for the gigantic size of the download and sometimes slow restarts, I would expect more Win10 feature changes, not just deep, behind the scenes minor fixes and security updates. It seems these can be done with packages 1/10th the size.
