The same reason some would rather use a crippled Win 10 OS by turning this, that, and everything under the sun off. Choice, fear, comfort.

Everyone isn't you and I, and don't have to think or see things the we do, or would like them to. Regardless, there's absolutely no reason for MS to be taking this stance other than forcing more Win 10 usage.

That said, I'm already on 10, see no reason to hang on to 7, but It doesn't change the fact I feel this is totally wrong and see no justification for it other than another path to a forced upgrade.
In your case turning things off makes sense but to the majority of users it sure doesn't so Win10 isn't crippled. And yes... it is my opinion but you keep saying that MS should keep the updates going for the new chips but they don't have to and unless some court rules otherwise they will not.

And in closing you seem to miss the key point. When you get a Ryzen processor you have to get a new motherboard because the AM4 socket is new and you can't just plug that processor into an existing motherboard you may have lying around. Those two items with the cost of the current hardware available will run about 400 bucks and then you may have to add RAM.

With that investment into a performance rig it only makes sense to get a new OS for it.

It is not based in reality for anybody including MS to keep on updating obsolete (or just old) stuff. HW makers are probably last to support their old products. MS is keeping some of that alive longer that HW manufacturers do. I'm all for that MS gets some of the staff involved in old OS to better support W10.

Id like to start off by saying that I understand how some feel about this issue. It would be 'nice' if MS would continue support for Win7/8.1 to the new chips that Intel/AMD have come up with. For an individual it would be a cost saving to not have to upgrade to that dreaded 10 and save them about 100 bucks in their new PC.

Business. well. They tend to purchase hardware and don't do upgrades and when they do it's cost of upgrades are just a part of business. I know for a fact that my health provider just did a complete system upgrade, hardware, OS, software, last year and it just was the cost of doing business. If there is a piece of software that can't be ported to 10 there's no harm in keeping it on the existing hardware/OS. It will still run just fine. There's no compelling reason to perform an upgrade on that PC. If it works it works.

To me this is just the old MS is evil for doing anything. There's no legal or moral obligation to keep Win7 going anymore.

I was just checking at AMD site for chipset drivers and for Ryzen platform there are drivers only for W10, no others. Not even HW manufacturers are interested in keeping up with older OSs. They know well that their HW will not perform at it's best in W7 and earlier.

And I suspect one would find similar results if they did a search for chipset drivers on say., Asus/MSI/Gigabyte sites.

    It's not an MS problem.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if MS stealthily slipped in an OS update breaking these CPU's from the start. A BS tactic, but MS wouldn't be the first company to pull such a stunt - Apple Accused of Breaking FaceTime to Force Users Into iOS Upgrade

Well, it's not a stealth move (yet) but...

What's particularly interesting about these two preview updates is that they introduce the detection of the device's processor generation and hardware support. Both include the following entry:

Enabled detection of processor generation and hardware support when PC tries to scan or download updates through Windows Update

As you may know, Microsoft announced some time ago that it would not support the latest generation of processors on older versions of Windows. To hammer this home even more, Microsoft revealed that it will block updates on older versions of Windows if the device was powered by a processor of the latest generation.

Test showed that this was not the case at the time of revelation. It appears now though, that the updates KB4012218 and KB4012219 introduce that functionality on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (and the server versions).

Tests need to be conducted to find out whether this is indeed the case when the release updates are made available though.

For now though, it seems like a good idea to avoid these patches if your Windows device uses a cpu of the latest generation, or if you plan to equip it with one in the future.
For information on the updates click the link and read the entire article at gHacks:

KB4012218, KB4012219: Windows Update processor generation detection
The next question is can you actually avoid those updates? Or will this be a "required" download to gain future updates?

Speaking of those drivers, I just installed 17.3.3 Chipset drivers and finally got full speed out of my SSDs. It was lagging behind Intel for sometime now.

Precisely. And BunnyJ, you know my feelings on Windows 10. Having said that, weren't hardware vendors pulling support drivers for XP and Vista prior to April 2014? This isn't unprecedented. Sure I run Windows 8, but I know Microsoft doesn't owe me anything. I can run it on older, but still suitable hardware.

Similar subject got heated over at the seven forums and was locked. Sure what I said may not be congruent with the tide of popular opinion, but it's no different than what is being said here.

Staff for XP and Vista is long time now in legacy mode, parts made when W7 came out also legacy. HW makers have 0 interest in keeping them alive except maybe for some PR.
