    Presumably in 3 years time most new PCs (and the associated components) will be built for these processors.

    That's assuming AMD & Intel haven't release a new generation of CPUs by then. :)

    I don't know about the "you will NEVER have to buy and upgrade to" part? If you buy new hardware your going to pay for a licence for Windows 10, if its preinstalled. Build your own desktop and your also going to have to pay for it, if that's the OS you want to use on it. Once you have a license though, there will be no fees for upgrades to new builds which is essentially the next new OS. No paying to go from Windows 10 to Windows 11, to Windows 12. < Just an analogy. I fully expect the 10 to be dropped off at some point and it to just be called Windows something or other. Windows Creators Edition maybe? And there will likely be some that hold out until the free upgrade really gets terminated, then cry because they have to pay to upgrade to Windows 10 after 7 EOL.
    The difference is though you will HAVE to upgrade, even if it breaks your programs and bricks your computer.

    And you are right, of course people will have to pay for it, just like they do now when they buy a new computer, or buy a retail version.

    Hi here

    NO YOU WON'T HAVE TO UPGRADE !!!

    If you want to run legacy OS'es simply install LINUX as your HOST and run any version of Windows you like as a Virtual Machine - this will work "Until the end of the Universe".

    However if you have the "Dosh" to splash out for new hardware it really seems silly to run older OS'es on it (unless you need legacy devices and programs - in which case simply run the older OS as a VM).

    XP for example is still working fine as a VM and can access my servers HDD's with around 10 TB size --that size HDD wasn't even thought of when XP came out years ago but using a VM you can still if required use for legacy. I use this XP system for Minidiscs -- the hardware won't run on any OS newer !!!.

    HDD1 is the 9.1 TB device on my NAS server Brownbear running Linux CENTOS 7 as a Host with W10 and XP as VM's - plus a few other machines on my LAN.

    Of course you have to upgrade if you are already using windows 10, isn't that what forced upgrades are ?

    Looking at these forums and the internet and news as a whole you wont know your machine is about to be bricked.. or made unstable perhaps un-startable.. even with a brand new state of the art computer ..until of course it is.

    Hi there

    I was running from a LINUX HOST - so all the VM's could be any edition of Windows I wanted -- I've even got a W98 system on a VM !! -- W10 is still freely available via W7 update if you have an old W7 / W8 / W8.1 system.

    W98 VM running :

    I don't know why you thought "I had to upgrade" because I was running W10 -- I did because it was FREE -- certainly not because I was FORCED into the upgrade.

    Maybe my English is a bit different but a VOLUNTARY (i.e by CHOICE) upgrade to me doesn't sound like a "Forced upgrade".

    Look at what VIRTUAL MACHINES can do -- there's no requirement to run Windows as a HOST OS (unless using HYPER-V). With VMWARE and VBOX Windows Virtual machines i./e Guest OS'es (any version you like - even Windows 3.11 if you can still find it !!) run perfectly OK on Linux Hosts (as they do on Windows Hosts too).

    You can run W10 X-64 VM's on an XP x-86 host also if you wish (provided you don't use more than 4GB RAM due to the nature of the 32 bit Host).

    You don't HAVE to upgrade in any way unless of course the hardware no longer supports what you are trying to run on it --that's where VM's come in really useful too.

    Cheers

    That's fine, unless you do anything that requires cpu power or a gfx card. I use Cinema 4D, and I just ran the Maxon Cinebench test as VMware guest and host (ie normal) on the same pc using the same OS. Guest showed a 15% cpu hit and my gfx card wasn't even detected in the VM. I'd say the VM solution is OK for lightweight legacy programs only. See snip (says Windows 8, but both are Windows 10)

    I think he's referring to having to upgrade to each new Windows 10 build, whether you want to or not.

    Hi there
    @badcrc

    Yes - if you want to use the power of new cpu /hardware / processors (graphic etc) plus new hardware instructions - then you will obviously have to use an OS that supports those -- remember also in future even HDD's might have PETABYTES of data (1 PB - 1,000 TB) so I/O subsystems will have to be re-written --it's totally unrealistic to expect an OS designed to support floppy discs to manage this type of stuff.

    The VM solution is perfectly great for legacy / older hardware which is what it's primarily intended for -- it really isn't designed for running leading edge hardware of course but a surprising amount of useful testing - especially of applications can be done on VM's.

    We don't get many people complaining that they can't run 16 bit Dos applications in Windows 10 so in future if an OS needs a 128 bit CPU with totally new graphic and other functionality I can't see "what the Beef" is about.

    @alphanumeric

    You DON'T have to update W10 at all if you don't want to -- although it's probably best to always do the security updates -- there's no cost involved and USUALLY an update doesn't break things -- however if it does then people as I've probably said AD NAUSEAM on these boards should restore from a previous version and wait until the relevant problem has been fixed - often quite quickly.

    Always take backups before a Windows update --seems obvious to me.

    Ms isn't the "Evil Empire" it's purported to be -- without getting political it is interesting seeing how much Filth, fundamentalist terror propaganda and lies are propagated on sites like Google without too many people getting into a fuss over it - I belive some of the UK Sunday papers were even showing as an example links on Google as to how to make an effective devastating car bomb and where to park it for "maximum effect" etc - and nobody seemed to be in any hurry to take that horrendously evil and perverted stuff down.

    Ms IMO is the wrong target --it of course doesn't want 100,000's of its customers having bad experiences -- it's a private company after all and without customers -- !!! well that's not a place it wants to be.

    On the whole the planet has benefited HUGELY from Windows - without something as easy to use as Windows - just think of all the stuff you'd still have to do by phone, wait for the post, wait for weeks to get a copy of a scientific paper etc etc.

    Cheers

    I seriously doubt that the average computer user would know how to do any of your suggestions. And Windows 10 does do automatic updates. Some updates have caused problems where the average user had to either seek help or take their computers to a shop and pay to get fixed.
