WMP seems fine for me too - like Doogie I thought I'd better launch it to check. Works ok but I only use .MP4 files. Could the ones having problems be using 3rd party codecs. I've never installed any codecs on my machines

Never installed any codecs that I know of either. I'm looking into VLC but that doesn't play MIDI files. Some of my playlists include MIDI, MP3, WAV, and WMA files. The only player I know of that handles all of those is WMP. (I also have Sony's MediaGo because I use that with my MP3 player, but that doesn't handle MIDI files either.) Wonder why WMP is working for some of us and not others. I really don't want to uninstall the update and so I'll keep watching to see if MS puts out a fix. Not optimistic though.
I feel for you and the others struggling with this. It makes me so angry that MS cause problems month after month. It's to the point I loathe patch Tuesday. It feels like a lucky dip every time. Last months failure to deliver them was fantastic. A much needed break and I hope it happens again! I do feel MS pushes updates out too frequently and I suspect the forthcoming creators update is going to bring plenty of tales of woe to the forum. As a keen PC enthusiast who gets very little time on the machines due to young children and busy working day I don't like losing spare time to updates and worrying about the after effects. Unfortunately it seems to be something I am battling with all the time. Between Microsoft cumulative updates and their constant updating and breaking of their native apps, iOS, Mac OS, PlayStation, Xbox and my wife's android phone I feel so much spare time is wasted updating and not actually using. Sadly I have no ideas on how to help with this WMP issue other than to empathise. Personally I'd leave the update installed for now and use VLC in the interim, even though it doesn't fully meet your needs it should get you by. I guess it'll be fixed at some stage.
MIDI is not secure but you can play the others by default.
You can add MIDI support if you want.
I looked through all the documentation, and the current 2.2.4 version does not support MIDI. So I'm back to square one. I have another program that plays MIDI files but not as playlists.
Any chance that the Notification/Action Center not popping up at all could be a side effect of this update?
I had something similar before this update, the calendar wouldn't show when I clicked on the time in the lower right taskbar. What I did to correct this behavior, at least so far was to restart Windows Explorer, it might work for you also.
The damned update has stopped at 95% how do i get it to start again
cheers

I think just wait it out. Hopefully it'll eventually kick back into life. Maybe give it an hour
